Can we talk about the D?

My bad. It's the tinhorns, then the clots and then the Bears. I honestly think all three of these games are winnable. And easier on the defense to scheme against. With Stroud being the obvious exception and biggest challenge of the bunch. We'll see. One week at a time though.

The offense is 30th in time of possession, 30th in 3rd down conversions, 30th in scoring, 27th in total yards per game, and 27th in passing yards per game.
The defense didn't play well from the beginning against Buffalo, but they played well enough to have won against both Miami and Cleveland. The defense was never meant to carry the team. They were meant to support a high powered offense. What we are seeing is a defense with a banged up secondary cracking under the load it has been forced to bare. This is 100% spot on. That's why I was laying it on the offense and QB more - despite our porous defense giving up all those points against the Bills. This offense should have been high-powered, but it looks like it's being run by a 50 cc engine at this point.
Nielsen's defrense ran into a buzzsaw last night.
Just completely got dismantled. I get the injuries at CB, safety/nickel and LB are big problems, but there's no way it should cripple your defense like that. And yes, the offense failing so hard hurts them too. The bills scored on 6 of their first 7 possessions. Nielsen needs to have a come to Jeebus moment with himself in the mirror about when and how often to stick to his stubbornness calling man coverage. Time to loosen the reins on that [BLEEP]. And what the hell is all of this rotating linebackers business?? I'm irked. Also - where the hell is all of this pass rush manufacturing he talked about in the offseason. There are some different twists, stunts and blitzes, but none of it has been an improvement over the prior guy.

I think that expectation going into the season was reasonable. But going into week 3, you have way more information and knowledge to know if you have to adjust expectations, philosophies, and defensive principles. When the offense has been playing that poorly for 2 games and now facing a good Bills defense? When you are facing a very good buffalo offense and probably the best QB so far this year? When you have not been able to stop any 4th downs? When you have let Tua and Deshaun make key scramble plays and now face an actual running QB? When you are down 2 starting DB's and have a 3rd go down early in the game? Why not have some wrinkles or adjustments for the moment at hand with all that new knowledge? The coaching, scheming, player development, et al for this franchise for the last decade on defense has seems to have been predicated on having our guys just beat your guys which has just basically never worked outside 2017, or getting lucky streaks with turnover luck to end 2022. That is not dependable NFL quality football. All we hear from the coaches is "we want them playing fast" and "we want to simplify things". So are you saying the players you picked for the team are not smart enough to play NFL level football? Good defenses play fast, but also play smart with quick play recognition and good communication. Not another team in this league rotate their LBs like we do.. I understand rotating the front 4, but the LBs? Hell no. There's absolutely no reason Muma and Miller should be on the field over Foye and Lloyd unless it's due to injury. Also, why is Ledbetter and Lacy getting the start over Armstead and Hamilton? I'd love to see the snap counts from last night because it seemed like Ledbetter and Lacy were on the field far more than Armstead, Hamilton, or even Big Roy. The hell is that about? I wonder if it was more of a "let me throw crap and see what sticks" because Lloyd was pitiful amongst Armstead, Hamilton and RRH. Armstead generated zero push whatsoever and I wonder if he's still suffering from a lingering injury. RRH was incredibly slow with terrible lane discipline that led to Josh Allen torching us on the ground. These guys all suck and I'm really trying hard to be optimistic. Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, and Andre Cisco have been massive let-downs this year when they should have been the very cornerstones of this defense. Hines-Allen got paid.. he doesn't care. Walker has been disruptive, forcing holdings etc... Lloyd was good the first couple of games. Has to be used a specific way I think, Foye does a lot of the dirty work that he didn't/shouldn't have to think about. I think Cisco has been trying to come back from injury every week and isn't terrible but isn't the same pro bowl caliber player. All being said, this defense is horribly underperforming for what we thought we were bringing in with Nielsen, Armstead etc.. last year's defense was good it just wore down towards the end and couldn't stop the interior runs. Now the defense just entirely sucks at everything.

They're being forced to play Armstead at DE because there's zero depth behind Walker and JHA. Why Hamilton isn't on the field more is a question mark. I think it's simply a matter of the DC trying to get cute when he doesn't need to be. Play your best players where they should be played and stop with the stupid [BLEEP]. (09-24-2024, 06:37 PM)NYC4jags Wrote: Nielsen's defrense ran into a buzzsaw last night. It was concerning how many times a Buffalo receiver was open with one of our players running 5 yds behind. We're getting killed with short dump off passes and motion/drag routes where it's just a foot race between WR and DB. It was concerning seeing us run the same scheme in that first half over and over even Buffalo are just marching down the field. This has been an issue with playcalling on both sides of the ball. They seem to stick to the gameplan when it's not working in the hope it will eventually work. It's also concerning how much teams are willing to go for 4th and short, even in their half in the 1st/2nd Q. I know teams are more aggressive with 4th down now but it also comes down to respect. Teams don't respect of fear this D. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Gambling on 4th a short is now a league-wide phenomenon, the analytics geeks say go for it and so they do. It's not just our defense who is dealing with it, but it's nice to stop it occasionally. On the flip side, we got to see how to effectively run wide in short yardage, maybe we learned a thing or two. “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.”. - Plato
I posted this in the game week thread, but it seems it fits better here.

That was just for one week and that week we went up against a team that had 2 backup tackles. We aren't getting enough pressure right now. We show less advertisements to registered users.
