Those were the natives of Mexico. 
We know much less about what the natives of the Bahamas and Hispanola that Columbus met were like before contect, but we know their societies were much less complex, much less hierarchical, and therefore their potential to do atrocities at that scale simply didn't exist. 
We also know that Columbus's crews, on all four voyages, pretty much as soon as they got there, started raping and enslaving, not waiting to figure out what kind of society they were dealing with, and Columbus knew about it.  He definitely took part in the enslaving but probably not the raping.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.
