I find the whole thing suspect.  How do you hire a coach for tens of millions of dollars, and not meet with him?  I bet there were a whole bunch of meetings off the books. Chicago has a better roster and a better QB.  I am not upset because I know next to nothing on Ben Johnson outside of his Coordinator Success.  Offensive Coordinator to head coach is a giant leap.

one thing about Salah i am curious about is how much chance did he have in NY? he has there owner Woody all over everything, from Zach Wilson, to Aaron Rodgers, and Hackett cause he liked Rodgers, he was looped into the Wilson as a QB who is a bust bigger than anything, but still got better play from him than Rodgers.

if it is Salah i am willing to give him a chance at least we know the Defense will not be rotating like Neilson did.

Top choice is gone. I don't fault Saleh completely for the mess in NY. But, he has made some serious bone-headed decisions on the field. That's what is scaring me away from him as a HC. He's more than welcome to be a DC here.

Corn, Glenn, Brady are still available.

Woah, woah, woah...the bears aren't going to win anything. They're as cursed as the Jags are. It's likely you'll be able to hire Ben Johnson off the scrap heap in 2029.

Said the same thing to the couple of bears fans in one of my fantasy leagues.  Both the bears and Jags HC openings are career suicide for anyone who takes the job.  The only difference is I said it would be 2027 instead of 2029.

I've never seen Ben Johnson crack a smile. Maybe he'll fit the Tom Coughlin mold. How will he handle having a subpar offensive line and a diva QB?

He was still my top choice, but it appears to have been a done deal a long time ago. There was no interview because his agent did all the negotiations for him. They just used the Jags and Raiders to extract a few more million from the Bears.

Without even having a face-to-face meeting with the Bears, how does he know how things will be arranged, who will have authority over the roster, how much power he will actually have?  The Bears didn't fire their GM.  Ryan Poles is still there.

Good Point.  Kind of like Bill Belichick with the Browns when he was building a great team and then the Browns announced their departure and the season pretty much tanked.  He was the one who hired Ozzie Newsome and slated Ray Lewis high on his draft board ...... they fired Bill and the rest is history.

Not quite the same scenario but some coaches deserve a 2nd chance given the impossible positions they are faced with in their 1st HC jobs.  I mean, what if Salah could hire his own OC and the Jets would have lost to the Rams and landed Trevor at QB..... perhaps things could have been different.

So he failed when things were stacked against him.  That's not a good resume.  You want to get someone who succeeds when the odds are against them.

Interesting article on ESPN about our season.

https://www.espn.co.uk/nfl/story/_/id/43...r-lawrence

Just a few things that stood out to me

-Khan said he left his meeting with Pederson the week before the season finale not liking the coach's plan moving forward -- which, according to a team source, included no major changes. That's when Khan made his decision.

"What we were doing was not working and a change in direction was needed," he said.

-Multiple sources inside the organization called the Jaguars undisciplined and not mentally tough.

-While they played to win every week, running back Tank Bigsby noticed something different over the final month of the season in team morale.

"Sometimes guys, they're defeated before they even step on the field," he said.

The comparison to McDaniels is actually a good one given what we know to this point.  Both are offensive minded guys.  Both kinda screwed over specific teams who attempted to interview/hire them. McDaniels with accepting the clots job then reneging and going back to New England and Ben with stiffing the commies last year.  Ben Johnson wasn't working with Brady in Detroit obviously, so perhaps he's a better mind than McDaniels is/was.

Schefter posted the video on X of Ben walking into the bears office today and giving his short little speech.  His enthusiasm seemed a little forced to me, so the introvert thing probably has some legs to it and depending on the degree of introversion I could see that potentially being a problem in leading an NFL franchise.  I'd just let it all play out and judge the results of our coaching search next season when we see the results on the field.  We may have also dodged a bullet.  We won't really know for another year or two.

You have to be emotionally invested in landing a particular coach to cope with not landing him.  It sounds more like you're coping with not getting your guy with snark and anger.  Good luck with that.

Hehe, that's how the entire SI article reads as well.  Quotes someone from the team he just left, quotes an "NFL executive" who clearly missed out on getting him, and the whole thing is about "Oooooh, he's an introvert."  Umm, I don't think that the GOAT Belichick is a fun guy to hang out with at parties.

I'm very disappointed we didn't get Johnson. He was the #1 option out there. I don't like people using his lack of HC experience as a reason to doubt him. He's been calling one of the best, most innovative O's in the league and done it without big name, high contract guys. You can point to plenty of co-ordinatiors who have had success as a HC. McVay, Shanahan, KOC.

The big question now is who is the FO's #1 target? Was it Johnson? Do they prefer someone else? They've had a long time to get their targets in order and positions are starting to get filled around the league. I'm hoping we'll hear something sooner than later about who we're going for but we continue to wait.

We already failed when both Khan and Baalke are making the hire. Khan is a good businessman but sucks at hiring personal. The team averages 5 wins a year under Khan as an owner. You would think he would smarten up and let some other equation to lead us to our new coach. Hire outside non biased decision makers. There are outside consultant agencies.

We took forever to hire Doug.

No you misread that. It says offered, not taken. Coen will probably turn the job down and stay in Tampa when they force another retirement. Then the Jags will have completely failed and will be left with no one exciting and Baalke will be looking for his next victim.
