Khan begins tempering fans expectations about drafting a 1st round QB

Quote:So if dave caldwell draft a qb with the 2nd round pick and he's a bust it damage his credibility as a gm as well because high draft picks are a premium. Ya'll fan needs to stop drafting scared and get the qb at 3 and take the same approach as if you draft him later on in the process. I'll rather have teddy bridgewater, brotles, or manziel as far as talent instead of back up qb aj McCarrons, Gabbert's cousin Jimmy Garropolo who plays just like him, or any other garbage qb later on in the draft.
Bridgewater and Bortles are not elite QB prospects. And they are not 'sure-fire" franchise QB's either. McCarron's and Garropolo's careers in college aren't anything to take lightly either. If Caldwell drafts a QB in RD2 and he's a bust, good for him, it's less meaningful if he took the right pass rusher or receiver with the 3RD overall selection instead of risking it on Bortles, Bridgewater, and Manziel who could also fail and cost you even more long term.

Ultimately, nothing is set in stone with any prospect. But it's also pretty obvious that the Texans and Browns, both of which are considered just as QB needy as we're, also don't feel as confident in these three by not making apperances at these so called "top three" QB prospects pro-days. If the Texans are confident any one of those three we wouldn't be hearing about them trying really hard to trade out of that number one slot either.

Quote:Problem is, there's no QB worth taking in this draft at #3. You'd be selecting the "best" of the worst, which aren't very different than the rest of the QBs that will go in later rounds.
who is to say there aint no qbs worth taking at#3.you guys was preaching Bridgewater at #1 for months now he aint? Was RG3 worth all them picks the Redskins gave up? my point is u dont know nobodys worth till they start playing.. We just need a qb.

I'm going to keep this simple because your response signals I should.

We have eleven picks.  No where is it written that it must be at #3.  I wouldn't be surprised if we take two, but I doubt the first is with #3.

If the fans had their way we would have thrown all 16 games last season and not really learned anything to acquire a QB that doesn't even look like anything special in terms of can't miss talent. At this point I'm leaning heavily on Watkins at #3. Maybe try to drop a couple of spots if possible and we can get Manziel or Bortles.

No pain, no gain.

If we take Watkins it basically means that we have to take a quarterback in the second round and our outside linebacker hole is still their. We have to go linebacker in the first or second round. What I would ideally like is one of the following options.

A) 1) Mack 2) Trade up for Carr or take Garropollo

B) 1) Manziel 2) Ryan Shazier (kids a stud)

Say what you want about Manziel but the kid has game, competitve as [BLEEP], and will be a perfect fit for this franchise. I get the feeling that things are going to fall into place with Manziel in the NFL.

My thinking is that we should pick up Watkins as falling-off-the-wagon insurance for Blackmon.  We need a deep threat weapon.  If Blackmon stays clean then we have thunder and lightning.

If the Texans were taking a QB in the first spot it probably would be news by now since there is no obstacle preventing them from working on a contract now.  Obviously they don't think any of the major QBs coming out are worthy of #1 status.

With the new CBA pretty much dictating salaries, there is not a whole lot of "working on a contract" that needs to be done. Why not see wait to see what offers are made for your #1 pick - even if you plan on taking a QB first.

I don't follow your logic. And nothing is "obvious" about what they are thinking.

Why would you ever want to announce your intentions, thereby diminishing your negotiating power with anyone who might want to trade up to your spot?

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

I hope you'll be willing to let it go if he's not.  But judging from the past, I'm not getting my hopes up.

This particular front office has been very transparent on what they have in mind. Caldwell and now Khan have cited the importance of a QB but also understand that a 1st round QB isn't the only way to build success.
It would be absolutely silly to draft a QB at #3 in this year's draft especially if a guy like Clowney, Sammy Watkins, Mack is there...

By that logic they must not think anybody is worthy of #1 status.

Nobody is moving into the #1 spot and giving up precious draft picks to get there for any thing other than a QB. Houston has a need for a QB and can sign anyone they want prior to draft day but they haven't. Logic tells you they don't think any college QB is worthy of the #1 pick since they don't have one inked.

If they wanted to keep the #1 spot they would have been in negotiations with whomever they covet at that pick. Since there is no news about that scenario it tends to make one believe they are trying to trade out of it.

They also haven't inked Clowney yet, is that because they don't deem him worthy?

They have nearly a whole month before they have to choose, why would they rush? What benefit do they get from inking a deal with anyone now? I agree its unlikely anyone moves up but its not impossible and once the pick is made, the deal is more or less done. The team picking 1 has no incentive to make the pic early.
