Would Khalil Mack in the top 5 feel like a "Gene Smith type of pick"?

Quote:I guess you could stretch it in that direction as DE, namely RDE is generally seen as a premium position, but it would have to be a LB that projects to be an elite pass rusher, and I am not sure that Mack does. LOts of doubt with the size, level of competition....et al. Just because Ware was one guy to do it doesn't mean Mack will. I think too many people are assuming Mack makes this jump like Ware did.

ive seen at least 5 analysts that compare him to clay matthews....

personally i think thats a good comparison. he might even have better coverage skills.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

Yeah just one guy like Ware did, or James Harrison, or Von Miller, or Justin Houston, or Clay Matthews, or Brian Orakpo...shall I keep going?

Quote:Then how does your post where you accuse me of changing the measureables of Mack and Ware fit into that? You all but called me a liar, specifically. When you assaulted my credibility was that merely insulting my post and not the poster?

I went off of numbers that I had seen of the 2 players in the past. They were different than the numbers you and Bullseye supplied. Otherwise I'd never have questioned it. I can see why you might be upset though, if in fact your numbers were legit. Sometimes I think people will go to any length on here just to try an prove the other wrong. The fact that you've directly insulted me in the past doesn't help my perception of you/ your motives, though. Anyway, I'm willing to meet you halfway.

We're not a true 3-4 though.

Do I think that Mack could be a stud in Pittsburgh's D like Harrison was?? And Matthews in Green Bay with Capers D is similar....Well I sure think a situation like that would give him his best chance....I'm just sure he becomes an elite pass rusher here in our defense (or most NFL team's defense, for that matter)

Fair enough.

I feel as if I have apologized to you in the past for insulting you and I know that I have purposefully not engaged you in any kind of extended conversation of late. If I have not apologized to you, then please take this statement of me being profoundly sorry for insulting you as that apology. I mean that in all sincerity.

That being said, please do not assault my honesty again.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Yes I think Mack would excel as either a LEO or SAM in our system.

Cool.

....and don't feel like you need to ignore discussion w/ me either.

I don't want people to feel they can't argue with me. Just that both sides need to keep the bashing to the opinions and not the person. Thats all. I'm not thin skinned in that regard. But if we insult each others opinions, be able to shake hands and not let it carry over to insulting the person. you know?

I guess my thing is they are two guys playing roughly similar positions (3-4 OLBs/undersized 4-3 DE).

Why would it be a major shock if they had similar builds?

You wouldn't think twice if there were guards that were 6-3, 310 in more than one draft.

Why is it so hard to believe two DE/OLBs can have similar builds?

There are plenty with whom I disagree, and some (including myself) may have factual errors in a given post. But I don't think people would manipulate data in the way you suggested to make a point. In my mind, for whatever that's worth, Deacon would be beyond that.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Ok, but theres no way a SAM LB is a premium - a Leo? Thats debatable. Last year Seattle took Bruce Irvin high in the draft as the LEO, correct?

Where I think his true value lies is in the idea that he can excel at both. He's a rare three-down LB that can play different roles on each down. Those kind of guys don't come around that often.

That kind of versatility is what would make his being drafted at #3 Overall not seem like a Gene Smith move to me.

I trust the evaluations and grading of Caldwell and Bradley to the point where if they see Mack a fit at #3, I'm cool with it until the on-field actions show otherwise. However, I see all the talk about defensive line/ends being priority or other positions being smoke so there could be trade back possibilities. I think we are going QB in the 1st. Even thought he class as a whole isn't that strong, QB is the biggest need. And I don't foresee us being in the top 5 next year (and I don't believe Dave or Gus thinks so either), so you can't plan on getting the QB the next year. In the end, you've gotta take a chance at times. I think QB is the first pick of the draft. We'll see though.

GO JAGS!!

Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

Its not hard to believe...I just thought I remembered Mack as slightly smaller/ slower and Ware slightly faster/ bigger. Not that it probably makes all that much of difference...

Again the one distinct difference would be Ware, Mack (and others like this) all went to star in pass rushing roles for textbook 3-4 scheme defenses.

Irvin has been their SAM the last two years while Clemons has been the LEO. That might change now that Clemons is here, though. We'll see.

Either way you're too caught up in the title of the position. In most cases for both the job title is essentially primrily pass rusher. If Von Miller, Clay Matthews, Brian Orakpo, or potentially Khalil Mack are your SAM then it absolutely is a premium position.

This Leo talk is pointless.

Just get good players.

Don Banks, from today:

3. Jacksonville -- Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo

Don't get the idea this will feel like a consolation prize for the Jaguars, even if they miss out on the draft's best pass rusher and receiver with Clowney and Watkins gone. Mack is the kind of disruptive, playmaking force Gus Bradley's defense can make great use of, and he has the non-stop motor to chase the ballcarrier all over the field, with the versatility to play all three downs. Jacksonville will find its quarterback in the second or third round; it won't roll the dice on a passer at the expense of the draft's second-best defensive prospect.

But if the Texans get Clowney, we need to respond to that like a puppet and draft OL first

There are times when I may 'massage' some data/information while on the internet. Like say, if there was a nice young lady around and I felt like I wasn't standing out from the crowd in a particularly positive way...

But irregardless, that's a mute point. I appreciate your vetting of my reputation Bullseye.

I can't believe you're addressing him this way.

You're confusing who does, and does not deserve the benefit of doubt, based on post history.

"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."

I think the height/weight and speed that was posted earlier pretty much goes against what you're saying....but you keep bringing it up.
