Manziel would certainly change the nation's perspective/rhetoric on our schedule/first 4 games

Quote:This is assuming Manziel, if drafted by the team, actually makes the field as a rookie.  That wouldn't be a given for any of the rookies.
This ^^. If we take Manziel, I highly doubt he plays during the year (maybe getting a few reps here and there). He has a lot of learning to do with progressions/pocket presence/etc. This is why I think taking him on our team is a great idea. We have the pieces (coaches/vets) and patience to take him on. I think he could be great with us. But I doubt he plays much at all with us if we take him.

Manziel would give the team a buzz they don't have now, that's for sure. After that initial buzz he'll have to keep it up with solely his play, which I think he's capable of.

I'd love to have him on the team.

Thank you for elaborating on that. And that's what I meant. Obviously he'd need to play well/win games for the draft-pick to make sense. But like you said, it'd help even before playing well and winning games. Like whereas Jaguars are the butt of the NFL jokes since the scheduling came out(ie, biggest Underdog and whatnot), we'd with one draftpick become the team quote-unquote 'most likely for a turnaround', 'the team that may surprise a lot of people this year', etc. That's what i mean by a change of perception/rhetoric, which as you said hopefully leads into a change in play and wins

Thank you for expounding upon that idea Redsky

I want 3 players. Clowney, Bridgewater, Manziel. Jaguars have the number 3 pick. Just give me one of those 3 at 3, and I'm happy.

There's no denying Johnny would bring a buzz to the franchise.  However I don't think he will or should play to start the season unless he can learn to play QB at the NFL level that quickly.  He has a lot to learn on the mental side of the game and I don't see him being able to do that in a few months of the offseason.

Yeah, I noticed some confusion on that, because regardless of how we all feel about Manziel, he's still a huge star and drafting him would bring a lot of attention.

Imagine if the team got on hard knocks, people would love watching Bradley and Manziel.

It could get people from around the country to look deeper into the organization and see all the good things they're doing. Of course all the positive attention creates expectations, and the team will have to win to keep it going, but I think they can be respectable this year.

Exactly.  There's a huge learning curve to be overcome here.  People think he can instantly step in and suddenly be the guy week 1, and the odds of that happening if he's drafted by the Jaguars are remote.

I think Caldwell has pretty much laid it out that if they draft a QB, there's going to be a period of time allowed for them to develop.

I'd say the odds of him starting right away as a first round pick are greater than him not starting.

Who was the last QB to get drafted in the first round and not play right away?

Rivers and Rodgers?  The difference there is that Brees and Favre were the current starters.

2013: Manuel

2012: Weeden, Tannehill, RG3, Luck

2011: Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder

2010: Bradford, Tebow

2009: Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman

2008: Flacco, Ryan

Most of these guys played right away.  I guess the most recent to sit would be Locker.

Watching Chad Henne: Part 3 while Johnny Football sits on the bench holding a clipboard for a full season sounds like a bad episode of the twilight zone.

Having Manziel on the team would make for a great storyline. Right up until, you know, Chad Henne starts the first game.

Even if Manziel does end up a Jaguar, there's no way he starts week one of 2014. I don't think any rookie QB starts week one for us.

Don't forget that Manziel is pretty smart compared to other QBs.  I don't see him having a problem learning the plays.

It's jmo, but I would predict our coaching staff to take the (let him get gameday experience) approach rather than sticking with Henne for the first few games.  People will want to see Manziel.  I think the FO and coaching staff will see this and do everything they can to get him ready week 1.  I think he would really have to play poorly in practice/preseason to not get the nod.

Not to get ahead of myself.  Imo the likelihood of us picking him is small.

Manziel is a Khan type of guy.  I doubt it will be a Caldwell/Bradley decision.

I think Khan has been consistent in letting the football people make the football decisions.

That's the main reason that I still can't shake the Bortles hunch. It has a Matt Ryan feel to it.

True, but there has never been a player like Manziel come along.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh  Pllllllllllllllease.

Johnny is merely the latest in a long line of HYPED qb's pre-darft.

He is not the be all and end all.

Really?  Are you his agent, or are you just related to him?  Because it's either that, or you're what?  12?  13?
