Jerry Jones is going to be pushing this to the extreme. Must suck loosing 3 straight week 17 play-in games.

Hope it gets denied just to see him have a hard time.

With all the Botox he's got jammed into that face of his, how could you tell if he's having a hard time?  It's the same facial expression no matter what.

If you want lowered standards of achievement, then you should be all over this change.  Some folks prefer higher standards because achievement should be rewarded.  Lowering the standards means participation is rewarded instead.

Well if you pay attention to those NBA playoffs and NHL playoffs, the stands are packed and everybody is into it.

NBA and NHL are exactly why I would be against it. Just be good enough to not suck the worst and you're in the playoffs...

This is what the country is coming to. Nobody wants to work for anything. They want everything handed to them or made easier. No offense, but higher standards are needed. It creates a higher level of competition and greater results. I completely disagree with this mindset.

GO JAGS!!

Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

I can't believe I missed it...this is yet another part of the conspiracy.

The conspiracy for what I haven't figured out yet...but it's definitely part of it.

Pretty soon they'll start giving out trophies to all the teams that didn't make the playoffs, just for participating!!! Big Grin

I don't like it from a competitive standpoint  -  but I would enjoy watching the additional games.

Jerry Jones , as owner of the Dallas Cowboys franchise that has been right around .500 over the course of the last 18 seasons combined, comes across as a fool for being a strong proponent for expanded playoffs.

The guy has systematically worsened NFL football since he took over from Tagliabue.

With 32 teams, & 12 teams making the playoffs, its perfect. It actually feels like an accomplishment when teams make the playoffs under the current system.

I don't want the NFL to feel like the NHL and NBA in terms of making the playoffs.

This would be the WORST decision under Roger Goodell when it happens.   I'm not even going to say if.

The NFL would be heading down the path of the NHL and NBA if as expected they expand the playoffs to 14 teams.   It would then be a matter of time that the NFL expands to a 16 team playoff system.

Quote:So if the Playoff pool is going to increase by one per each Conference, does this mean that technically speaking a Division can get all four teams into the Playoffs? Anyone do the math on that yet?

 That's correct.

I just don't get why people think adding one team per conference is SUCH A BIG DEAL

And people keep saying, "Oh no, we are going to be like the NBA."  Well, the NBA is actually growing in popularity. I'm not a fan of the NBA, but when playoffs come around it becomes more interesting.

Adding one more team to the playoff system is not going to ruin the league.

Quote:There will only be one team in each conference getting the bye week in the playoffs, under the new system, should it happen, IIRC.

I remember when there used to be as many as 3 teams earning bye weeks. Winning the division earned you a bye week back in the 80's...

The 80's were yet again the golden age of something else

Sadly,  it's becoming a distant memory.

Once there are complaints that a # 1 seed gets a bye because they are in a week division,  the call will go up to expand the playoffs to 8 teams per conference,  eliminating byes.   It's as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.

Quote:Time for 2 championships: regular season and tournament. Everyone is eligible for both. Best record in the regular season gets a title then we have a 32 team tournament seeded by record.

If they play it right they can parlay a 26 game regular season and 5 rounds of the playoffs tournament into 36 weeks of play every year.

Then 5 weeks of Free Agency.

5 weeks of Draft hype

6 weeks of training camp/pre-season games.

We can have a world with no offseason!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you described reminds me of the meaningless College Basketball season.   They play an entire season,  only to have Conference Tournaments that open the door for practically all of the teams to have a chance at landing in the NCAA Tournament.

Adding one team to the playoffs per conference is only the first step.    Like I expressed earlier in this thread,  once a # 1 seed gets a bye because they are in a weak division,   the call will be for elimination of byes.  Hence adding one more team per conference to the playoffs.

If the regular season had more meaning in the NBA,   I truly believe you would pay more attention to it.   The reason i'm only a very casual NBA fan,  who practically doesn't watch any regular season games,   is the regular season means so little.   Some people like the sport enough that they will watch it regardless of what the league feeds them.    I'm not one of those people.    I'm old enough to remember when the NBA didn't have a 16 team playoff system.    That's when I paid attention to the regular season.
