<p style="font-family:'Mercury SSm A', 'Mercury SSm B', Georgia, serif;font-size:20px;font-style:italic;color:rgb(41,41,41);">Caldwell doesn't believe the majority of the 2014 quarterback class will be able to contribute early, but Johnny Manziel might be the exception.


 

Johnny Manziel played only two seasons at Texas A&M before declaring for the2014 NFL Draft, foregoing his final two seasons with the Aggies. Regardless of his relative inexperience, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell told reporters at his pre-draft press conference on Friday that Manziel is the most NFL ready of the quarterback prospects in the draft class.

 

While Caldwell admitted that the majority of the quarterback prospects won't be ready to step in and play right away, he singled out Manziel as the possible exception.

 

"Johnny would probably be the one guy you could plug in there sooner rather than later just because his style of play isn't going to change much from Year 1 to Year 2," Caldwell said (via Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union).

Makes me believe he won't draft him now.  Either way it's hard to believe anything that's being said now.  Someone like Glazer may come out a day or two before the draft and say something reliable, but that's about all I'd believe.

I disagree with his statement. He obviously knows way (insert 15 more ways) more than me so he's most likely correct. Not gonna be mad if we take johnny tho. I've just never been more confused on a prospect before.

If picking a LT solidifies the o-line outside of Center, we might be on to something. Especially if you take a WR in the second and a qb in the third. But who knows. these guys are all playing the game now

I'm fine with whatever happens.  I haven't married myself to any of the top tier QBs.  If we get one of them, great.  If we don't, I won't be howling about it. 

 

The fact that JM fanboys are using a portion of a quote from Caldwell as some sort of validation is something we've become accustomed to here after seeing Tebow fans do the same thing.  Caldwell was basically saying Manziel is what he is, and that you're not going to see a lot of progression from year 1 to year 2.  While he's the most ready to step in now, he never said he'd be the one who wound up being the best option over the course of a career. 

 

Vince Young was a phenom when he took over as a rookie.  Remember the "all he does is win" mantra?  Once defenses figured out how to shut him down, he faded quickly because he wasn't a guy that was going to develop beyond what he was.  I'd be careful in misinterpreting what Caldwell is saying as some sort of acknowledgment that Manziel is the guy in this draft.  Especially when he's said on more than one occasion that this QB class needs time to develop.  If he's saying Manziel won't change much from year 1 to year 2, he's kind of saying that won't be him developing.
