He's a joke now. I am not unthankful for what he did during his tenure in Jacksonville. I'll always remember the year he and Fred Taylor ate defenses up during our last great play-off run. Outside of that though, he really needs to let it go. He can play the "victim" card all he wants. The only victim here was the front office over the last two years. It had nothing to do with the team trying to get younger. It had to do with the fact that over the last two years, he had hit a wall health and production wise. It made no sense in bringing him back for this season or any further. It's a shame that he didn't learn humility after being behind Taylor for a couple of years and getting to know him.

So he's upset the team didn't go out of their way to give him a new contract? He's taken a beating sure, but he's been paid handsomely for it just like all the other athletes who've taken beatings. So the team didn't cave when he held out yet all the fines he accumulated during the holdout, which he agreed to when he signed the deal, were forgiven. By contract the team could have forced him to pay the fines but for the sake of appeasement they ate the cost.

There are always going to be fans who will go on the attack when players leave.  I think that was muted considerably with Fred Taylor because he never really trashed the team after being released.  He went about the business of landing on his feet to extend his career.  In the end, he avoided burning bridges, and it made it much easier for fans to embrace him when his career was done. 

 

The Russell Allen situation is a funny one because you've got one thread where people are celebrating his release because he was a scrub, then jumping into the other thread talking about what a shame it is he's suffered a stroke.  I guess it depends on the situation, but some of the same folks opining that they wish the team would have signed him to a 1 day contract so he could retire a Jaguar were the same ones celebrating his release.  In the end, he retired.  He only played for one team, so guess what?  He retired a Jaguar.

 

MJD will always be a guy who was the face of this franchise for several years.  He was the star until he started to decline.  It's unfortunate, but the NFL is indeed a business, and he was worn out as a Jaguar.  What he's saying now about being wronged will irritate fans, and if he keeps doing it, it simply stokes that discontent.  In the end, when his career is over, the overwhelming majority of fans will be talking about whether he deserves to be included in the Pride of the Jaguars.  The larger population won't give a crap what he said after signing with the Raiders.

A fine post and I agree with most of it, but Fred did say (when our attendance was at its worst in 2009 and when we needed him most) that this was a college town first and foremost and that the Jags might be better off in another city like L.A.

I can accept him into the Pride as he deserved to be per his play on the field, but his commentary was idiotic, inflammatory and what I would define as the worst kind of trashing of this fine city that cheered him on for many years. I would love to see someone write up a post in defense of his comments as if he was our Matrix Oracle and that he just told us what we "needed" to hear, but it better be good and I mean really good.

Or maybe he was just saying the truth at the time, exactly how he and the article explain it? The jags were averaging 49k a game. Your city simply will not have a football team if that keeps up. There was no malice or derogatory intent with the comment.

I remember Fred saying this.  It didn't really bother me at the time, and it still doesn't.  Fred was being honest at the time.  The Jaguars were struggling to avoid blackouts, and there was a serious concern that the team was in jeopardy of moving.  He was asked about it, and expressed an opinion.  That's a far cry from trying to play the victim as MJD has done.

That's been true for the entire life of the franchise.  But, I think it's less of an influence now, and as we're seeing at UF, they're starting to see attendance issues.  At the time Fred said what he did, it was completely accurate.  I was in the stadium with 40k fans in their seats.  It sucked.  But, we've long since turned a corner.
