"Big Daddy" Don Garlits aiming for 200 mph run in electric dragster
|
"Big Daddy" Don Garlits aiming for 200 mph run in electric dragster Big Daddy is still the one to beat. Fifty years after he became the first drag racer to break 200 miles per hour in the quarter-mile, Don Garlits is aiming to hit that mark again -- only this time in an electric car. The 82-year-old’s Swamp Rat 37 is a high-tech dragster fitted with a 2000 horsepower electric powertrain that’s as quick as it is quiet. http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/05/0...p=features ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Gotta love it at 82, still looking for new challenges. Hope he has an extension cord long enough!
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
The one thing about those electric cars is that they launch so fast because there's no delay in getting the power. I've seen similary types of stories from rally style electric cars, and they have a ridiculous 1/4 time. The gas motors tend to wind up slower, but they have a higher top end.
No engine noise. That would suck though. Anyone who has been to Gator Nationals knows the sound and the smell are part of the experience. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Yeah, I used to race at a local track and the sound, the smells, the Fire coming out of the headers, were what made it exciting ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
Meh, I did this in a Chevy Volt after I accidentally charged it overnight on a 220V socket. I just coasted the rest of the way into work.

In 1974 at the old Lakeland Dragstrip in Memphis (IHRA) I remember a grudge match between Big Daddy and Ray Godman (Tennesse Boll Wevil)
Since the track was IHRA and did not have a sanctioned timer at that event, all speeds were not certified. It had been a blistering August afternoon and a front came thru at sunset, lowered the temperature from 90's to 77 and raised the humidity. Both of the combatants wanted to run before the rain and while the track was still hot. Ist Run: Godman ran 252.33 thru the traps. 2nd Run: Garlits ran 251.86 " " " . Godman had the lower combined ET's so he won. I remember being in the pits between races when Don came over to Ray's wheelchair to talk to him and his driver. "Damm Ray, wish that was a sanctioned run" "Aw Shoot Don, we do that all the time round here" "Yeah Rite and I do 350 at Gainesville" General laughter and next race Garlits busts 250mph. Was it the first, I don't know, I had no idea I was in the presence of legends. HeadSlap
When they have no time, they think about it!
When they go down hard, they think about it! Just watch Peyton, Andrew, Caep even Mr. Bundchen. |
