Blake Bortles

Like I've been saying. If you like a qb, take him when you have he chance.

Sacrifice Henne.

If a qb is ruined because of starting too early then he isn't the qb.

I am trying to get more behind this pick. Right now I am sitting at a 7.5 as far as liking the pick. Can we have some discussion on some clips? His bowl game is interesting. He is more of a short to intermediate thrower than I thought he was. He has some very ugly interceptions (Gabbert esk). However unlike Gabbert, he is willing to stay in the pocket. Perhaps he will be the QB we all envisioned Gabbert would be.

Thanks Captain Hindsight.  You don't start any player at any position before they're ready.

It's obvious now that they could have taken Watkins/Mack at that pick and came back up for TB/Manziel. Dave has put all his chips in the Bortles basket.

I'm curious as to what everyone else would have done for QB?

Draft Manziel?  Obviously a good choice.  I mean It's pick 20, and he's still not gone yet.  Wouldn't have been a reach at all.

Draft Bridgewater?  Has also fallen.  His wonderlic score was a slight concern.  I still like the kid, and think he could succeed.  But again, he's still up there on the board.

Draft someone in the later rounds?  We might still do that, actually.  But I think Bortles is the one to be groomed to go.  But I doubt most of them would really amount to much.

Wait until next year? You'd have to draft one next year that would start right away.  Who knows if one will be available?

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Can we focus on the fact his hot girlfriend is coming here with him?

I don't think that was Caldwell tonight.  I think it was Gene Smith in a Caldwell mask.

Bortles was the number one player on our board.

With Clowney and Watt at Hou. at least we got a QB with some size

High chance Houston gets Clowney AND either TB/Manziel

I've thought about this, and after knowing what we do today (that teams are not really placing a ton of value on Bridgewater and Manziel) I would have done the same. We needed a QB, other teams were very high on Bortles, we dug Bortles personality (which I think was a big factor Bridgewater and Manziel seemed fake to me in interviews), and we weren't entirely sold at the prospects at 3. So yeah, would've gone Bortles.

Texan fan here, gotta say I was scared to death we would draft this guy, no that I am too excited about Clowney.  But I think this guy is definitely not Gabbert 2.0 nor is  he Big Ben unfortunately for the Jags.  He has poise and isn't scared to take the hits, will definitely stand in against the rush.  However, the arm strength is not close to Big Ben's, and he isn't anywhere nearly as polished as Big Ben was coming out.  He tends to lock on to first read, throw off the back foot, hold the ball low in the pocket and make W&T&F plays.  But he is definitely not Gabbert, he might end up having too much poise, hold the ball too long and take too many hits.  He kinda reminds me of a poor man's Eli Manning honestly. Less gifted physically, but can run very hot and very cold, he led a lot of comebacks this year.   I don't dislike him really but just not so high, that cleveland deal was ridiculous, if they had that on the table kinda hard to pass up.  I wish the kid good luck.

I'm usually the unreasonable one here (Well aside from TMD and JungleCat maybe).  Maybe it's just because I've wanted a QB for so long that I'm perfectly okay with this.  But:

-Bortles passes the 26/27/60 test iirc

-This chart:

Shows that he's good up against the Blitz, and under pressure.  Even better against Pressure than Bridgewater, and Manziel.

-You really should give Caldwell a shot at picking the QB.  If it doesn't pan out, then you can all freak out as much as you like.  But most of you gave Gabbert a shot.  Why not Bortles?

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

If they can teach him proper mechanics, and how to consistently throw with velocity, the dude should have a solid career. I have seen passes where he displays more than adequate arm strength, but too many times he seems to float the ball.

His frame, athleticism, toughness, awareness, leadership all seem to range from above average to top tier. It's refreshing to see how often he steps up in the pocket and shakes defenders.

For the time, I'll trust the staff that they will be able to iron out Bortles flaws. He could turn out to be a very good qb for us.

If he's ruined because he's physically beaten to a pulp, you may not know if he is the QB or not.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

I'm really curious if a trade was offered. Buffalo jumped quick to #4. Could we have traded to 9 and still gotten Bortles or did Cleveland like him and that's why they traded.

That's what Gene Smith said about Gabbert.
