Caldwell has wanted Bortles for a long time

"tough, reliable, competitve, and smart".....

first thing out of Bradley's mouth when asked what separated him from the other QBs.

(not, he didn't size size)

Quote:I hate this kind of obvious defense of the pick....

You could say the same thing for many failed picks of the past as well.

Ooooh, so Caldwell & the scouts were in agreement....well no [BAD WORD REMOVED] sherlock.

To me, its a weak and obvious defense of the selection.

Similar to how the previous regime defended the Alualu pick.

Hey TMD, you lost the bet. Almost time to pack up for a week.

On Wisconsin.

I believe that Cleveland wanted to trade down the entire time and figured they could get a top player after that trade down and still get one of the 3 top QB of this draft later in the first round either at their pick or by trading up (which they did)

Well of course, but nobody knows that.

I believe that Cleveland would have taken Bortles.  When he came off the board, they looked to trade down because their target was drafted.

They passed on Manziel twice.

Quote:Yeah it was said about Gabbert.  But that correlation doesn't imply the end result will be similar.

watch this play at 1:35... You haven't seen Gabbert do that one single time in his life.  This is where I see Big Ben

Yeah, you are correct.

I'll say this too, Bortles definitely throws better on the run than Gabbert. Not close.

Man he has some thin legs though....hope that doesn't lead to leg injuries as a pro.

Also, every highlight in that vid was him in the shotgun didn't they use drop back at all?

passed on him, then specifically traded up to get him.

That tells me that they wanted Manziel, but figured he'd slide initiially and they'd be able to maximize their first round with a trade down/ adding picks.

Oh, now you come around and talk to me, when you want something... Typical woman.... Wink

P.S. last we spoke about this we agreed you'd give me a week after the draft to get any possible meltdown out of my system before I had to pay up.

I'll honor it, just give me the week like you said.

that tells me Manziel was there second choice. Back to

Bortles.. His vision down field on the run

Is really good and to answer your question the Missouri/Ucf game had Bortles playing under center all game.. Albeit it was not a pretty tape.

They were still risking losing him.  Any of those teams ahead of them could have traded back with a team that really wanted Johnny Football. Then another team could jump up for Bridgewater, and then they'd be stuck with 4th choice.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

If the Browns had the conviction that Johnny is their guy, they would have been fine taking him at 4 or at 9.

Well come to think of it, The Browns did pass on Manziel twice.  Passed on him at 4 and passed on him at 9.

I'm sure Atlantic City just loves it when TMD comes to town...

I get chills thinking how a young Blake Bortles sat in EverBank as a kid watching Mark Brunell and now is following in his footsteps.

Heard something like he has been to 5 or 6 games.

Honestly, I don't get the Gabbert comparisons. His pocket presence is one of his strengths and he is constantly looking down field to throw the ball. The best comparison to his style of play is Big Ben.

Would any of us, say four or five weeks ago, have been totally shocked if the Texans had selected Bortles #1?

And now the Jaguars have him. I think it's pretty remarkable and we should all be praising the pick.

Praising because it's a no-brainer? No. Because it's a sure thing? No.

Praising because after years of saying we need our guy, we have a GM who went out and did it. And perhaps put his tenure on the line (I don't think that's being overly dramatic.) This seems much different, and better, to me, than the Smith selection of Gabbert.

The NFL is, after all, entertainment - and it's going to be extremely fun to see how all this develops and plays out. And who knows, it may actually work!
