No, it's basically a three year program where you're trained into a function. They start you off with entry level pay and there are evaluations at 8, 16, 24 and 36 months with a raise each time if you're meeting or exceeding expectations. Idea is you'll earn a salary worthy of your job and level of knowledge at the end of the three years.

In a way, yes. I do have a massively experienced mentor who's helping to train me. He's effectively retiring at the end of this year and I will be taking his place.

It certainly is a good route, the only worry I have is that the field I'm in (natural gas distribution networks) is likely to fold between now and 2030-2040. But for now, it's all good. There's 16 of us in the program in total, one of which is "training" for the same position with me right now and she had a friend that turned down a position at the company because she thought the pay/secondary benefits weren't good enough. I'm not sure what doesn't sound good enough about two 7.5% raises in the first 16 months but maybe that's just me.
