Sounds to me like Ryan Clark is spot on.  Goodell rushes to judgement on so many cases, but not this one?  Then he is able to lobby on behalf of Indianapolis to get a Super Bowl?  I know Goodell doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, but he has to do something.

I imagine the consequences would be much higher for Irsay than an average player. Could he be forced out of the NFL similar to D Sterling?

I can't imagine that would even be close to that.  I was thinking a 4 game suspension similar to what a player would get.

 

If a player was found with what Sterling was found with, he'd be out for a while.  You can't give players consequences for hurting the league, and not making the people who run it not have consequences.

The NFL has done this more then once. This situation above. Last year with the Seattle corner. But they are quick to pounce on someone like the corner in Miami who simple speaks his mind.

It's not even about the players getting punished at this point. What Irsay did goes well beyond what most players get punished for.  If a player in the NFL had done what he did, he would be close to banished.

Irsay has a player on his own team who by all accounts truly looks as if he was trying to do something to help conceive a child. Doctor has come out speaking for him and all. Mathis understands that he was at fault for not at least reporting it to the league before hand, and has accepted his punishment. Now the league drags on even more with this Irsay issue. It's ridiculous.

 

The Irsay issue is now over 2 months old and the league has pretty much done squat.

The players and owners are two different situations.

 

The players are under rules collectively bargained by the NFLPA. The substance Mathis is suspended for is a banned substance as agreed to by the NFLPA. He has no leg to stand on.

 

What are Goodell's powers to suspend an owner? There is nothing written into the bylaws like there is with the players. My guess is Goodell will take action prior to the season as the pressure is mounting.

Nobody even knows if the owners have by laws.  The NBA owners do, and many of them came to light with the Sterling thing.  I would imagine the NFL owners have something possibly similar.  The owners/coaches have some sort of policing by the commisioners office.  The Saints/New England Patriots/Bud Adams situations prove that.

 

The main point is, you cant punish people that work for you for things that seem to be much more mundane....and then not police yourselves.  It's a double standard, and when the next collective bargaining agreement comes up, I would make my case for it.

I'm not shocked that nothing was done to Irsay. Players get and will always get the ish stick. I'm with Clark on that. But I don't think owners are under the same rules as players. There not under contract by the NFL. Could Goodell really do anything to him tho?

If the Bounty-gate issue is any example I would think it's clear that Goodell can (and will) take action against Irsay.

There is still a code of conduct to be upheld. While I have not seen the paperwork it takes to buy a team, there HAS to be something in there about this sort of thing. If a player was charged with multiple felonies for possession of a controlled substance and almost $30K in a duffle bag, Roger wouldn't wait to enact some sort of punishment. Of course Goodell is playing favorites here. He is just as obvious with this as he has been since day 1. Irsay, at the very least, should pay a hefty fine and be suspended for a portion of the season. Probably the best thing for him would be to step back and get his life in order.
