There is still a code of conduct to be upheld. While I have not seen the paperwork it takes to buy a team, there HAS to be something in there about this sort of thing. If a player was charged with multiple felonies for possession of a controlled substance and almost $30K in a duffle bag, Roger wouldn't wait to enact some sort of punishment. Of course Goodell is playing favorites here. He is just as obvious with this as he has been since day 1. Irsay, at the very least, should pay a hefty fine and be suspended for a portion of the season. Probably the best thing for him would be to step back and get his life in order.

I think it's been shown that Goodell is empowered to act in pretty much any manner he sees fit. Look what he did to an owner's team in New Orleans.

 

I think he's trying to figure out what the appropriate punishment should be. There's no real template for this.

When did you become the moral compass of this message board? You seem to very judgy.

Goodell has no problem issuing fines and punishments on players that have not had their cases resolved, why is this situation any different?

Edit: The whole he's an owner and not a player thing is bogus. Management/owners in most corporations are held to a higher standard than most employees.

Irsay is supposed to be the leader of a franchise in the NFL. Whether in writing or not like the CBA for the players should not matter. He should be held to a much higher standard than the 21-30 year old guys that play.

There we go again with the judging. I'm being childish because I think Goodell should take a stance against Irsay? I'm not judging Irsay, he judged himself when he was arrested in that car. You just come off as very pompous. If you are ok with that, then do your thing.

He suspended Roethlisberger, and he was never found guilty. The proof that Irsay did something (and admitting himself to rehab) shows he was guilty.

Max fine of 500k. He can not attend games or be apart of team activities for 4-8 games.

One of the big issues to me is the length of time between it happening and when some sort of action is taken. No clue what the punishment should be, but it should not take this long. It's pushing two and a half months. The league hit Mathis in what, a week, less then that ?

 

They should have delivered something rather quickly to a figure with such influence in the league.

 

quick edit: Regarding the Mathis situation (again), he took fertility drugs. Irsay endangered the lives of hundreds if not more yet Mathis has already been given a punishment.

I'm not sure what jurisdiction any league should have over any owner, unless his behavior is detrimental to the league.  And no, I don't consider an owner being a loose lipped moron or someone with a substance abuse problem a detriment to the league as a whole.  With all the rules in place regarding moving franchises, etc, it would be very difficult for a single owner to be a detriment to the league.

Goodell was probably waiting to find out what Irsay was being charged with. You, apparently, would have applied penalties without knowing the legal charges. That makes little sense.

 

Goodell has waited to find out what someone is being charged with before. Other times he didn't see the need. Now that Irsay is not being charged with a felony (and I'm waiting for someone to accuse Goodell of controlling the legal system in Indiana) I assume Goodell will soon come up with some form of punishment.

 

I still don't see a reason to be perturbed with the amount of time this has taken. Are you upset with the amount of time he's taken regarding Ray Rice?
