I'm a little worried about Bortles.


He has a funny name.

Hey guy, been off the boards for abou two months now. I have been off the grid for that time as well, so i'm a little behind all the news. I like the Bortles pick a little, but one thing scares me; everyone talks about his mechanics being so bad, does this not sound like another Gabbert to you? We fell in love with Gabs and his size/ceiling, this just seems eerily familiar. I am still going to argue till im blue in the face that Bortles will be a future HoF, just wondering if anyone else has thought this

I just don't see it.. Plus he stands in there and takes some hits and is excellent throwing on the run. Reminds me of a more athletic Roethlisberger.

Other than their height and build, Gabbert and Bortles are two completely different QBs. Bortles had a successful college career and also does well under pressure. Gabbert was just a total project and really had no business going where he did.

No. Bortles is a far better QB than Gabbert coming out the gate, it's night and day. Gabbert wasn't good at all and he was supposed to sit and develop but JDR was a [BAD WORD REMOVED]. The mechanical issues we're talking about with Bortles have to do with his footwork and lower body consistency, but they're not fatal flaws or anything like they were with Gabbert. He could start right out the gate and be pretty serviceable, but in the long run it's just better for him to sit this year especially with the questions about the O-Line and two rookie receivers starting.

If you need to help understanding the difference between Gabbert and Bortles just look at the type of offenses they ran and how they performed when under pressure. This is one of the few cases where stats are a good indicator of the difference between two QBs.

Bortles is far more accurate and played in an actual prostyle system (with college spread concepts) while Gabbert played in a completely spread offense where he threw and bunch of screens and short passes, as you can tell by the difference in their yards per attempt. Bortles is also a better rusher despite being bigger.

Not only does Bortles have a higher ceiling than Gabbert, he also has a much higher floor as well.

Another thing about Gabbert is that he regressed after his first full season of starting while Bortles got better. I'm not familiar with the situation that was going on at Mizzou at the time, but I don't think UCF had more talent than Mizzou regardless.

I am for sitting Bortles, but not just for his development, but to allow the rest of the team to gel instead of throwing him into a bad situation to get his confidence crushed. The young QBs I see excelling seem to usually play on good teams. It's very hard for a young QB to lift an entire offense. Let's get this young offense going a little before we put Bortles in there. I see that as a less risky course of action. There are too many new offensive linemen, new wide receivers, etc. Let Chad Henne deal with all that mess.

He is actually just finishing a pass he started in 2009.

 

If Bortles has a year to develop and practice it stands to reason he should improve on the little things that can make a big difference.

Don't get hung up on Bortles sitting for an entire year.  He could easily start after the bye or if Caldwell and Gus want to start him at home Bortles could start against the NY Giants.  Another option would be for Bortles to play one or a couple series each game in the last half of the season.  That would give him some live game experience before starting the next year.

Good post ....... but there is no real data that supports either decision (starting in year 1 or being the backup).  Aikman, Marino, Elway, P Mannning, E Mannning, Big Ben, and many other sucessful QBs started in year 1.   Sure, some had more sucess that others in year 1 but who's to say that didn't speed up the progress that Manning and Elway experienced in year 2.  Perhaps if Carson Palmer started in year 1, he would have been more experienced and the Bungles would have won 1 more game the year they made the playoffs and had to face the Steelers in the wild card game when he got his leg severed by Kimo Von Olhoffen.

 

As stated in my earlier post, I'm just happy to see Bortles sitting because I think our Oline is still going to be pretty bad this year.

Marino  didnt start till' week 8  and the only reason he did was because the starting QB was failing miserably.

At first I thought some of that too....but the more I went back and watched, the less and less I felt the above. The only similarities are the size/ weight and Blaine sounding like Blake. Thats really pretty much it.
