Jairus Byrd to get back surgery
|
Hmmm......if this is stemming from something from before any recent practices, then I'm kinda glad we never got this player.
per rotoworld: Saints FS Jairus Byrd is undergoing "minor" back surgery on Thursday to correct a disc issue. According to coach Sean Payton, Byrd would not have undergone the operation were it the regular season. The team is "shooting" for Byrd to be ready for camp. Although the Saints appear to have dodged a bullet with the injury's severity, it's never a good thing when a player has to undergo surgery in May. As it is, there's no reason to worry about Byrd's status for Week 1. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote: Guys always start screaming about how much they want security and respect when they're about to go over a cliff. Quote:The article does say that the Saints appear to have dodged a bullet re;severity of the injury, and he may even be ready for camp. Of course I'd defer to Bradley, et al because they know the scheme and I don't, but it would seem Byrd would have been a great fit here. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
I wonder if Caldwell had some idea of this and that's why they didnt go after him. Sometimes these things leak I
Out.
Cheever ended his career here a season in for a "minor" back surgery.
Who can forget Fred Taylor's "minor" groin strain. Just because they say it's minor doesn't make it so.
What lies behind us, and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Cheever would have easily been the greatest C in Jaguars history had he not injured his back-weightlifting, IIRC. It's no coincidence that the 1996 playoff run-which had monster rushing games against Buffalo and Denver-featured Cheever at C. When Widell returned in the AFC Championship game, the running game bogged down, including a key 4th and short that the team didn't convert because Widell was pushed into the backfield....though in fairness to Widell, NE had a heckuva defense overall, and Widell was a very good pass blocking C who seemed good at picking up the blitz. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

Quote:Offseason of 1997-right after that playoff run of 1996. Oh, because you mentioned the running game bogging down when Widell returned in the AFCC game....I had thought Cheever might have gotten hurt in the divisional game. My memory of Cheever isn't as good as yours here, I mean, I do remember he was good, but forget the specifics of when he got hurt, We show less advertisements to registered users. Widell got hurt in one of the late regular season games during that run and Cheever replaced him in the lineup. Means and the running game took off, culminating in those playoff performances against Buffalo and Denver. Widell returned to the lineup the week of the AFC Championship game. Worst to 1st. Minor issues can always become something more. Good luck to him and the saints.

When it comes to back surgery, I don't think there is such a thing as ' minor' surgery.
To this day, I consider Cheever one of this team's unsung heroes of that playoff run, and I often wonder how 1999 would have turned out had Cheever and Tavian Banks not gotten hurt.
Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
Quote:I agree now and thought so at the time.Widell was horrible at run blocking. He was an actual liability in the run game. We never established a running game until he was finally out of the lineup. It seemed like every player Coughlin tried at the position fared better than he did, yet Coughlin kept giving him the start. I think Widell's rear end led the league in tackles on our RBs. Quote:Widell was horrible at run blocking. He was an actual liability in the run game. We never established a running game until he was finally out of the lineup. Agreed completely. I cringe at the seemingly countless times Joel Steed blew up running plays because he had Widell in the backfield. Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!
