Thoughts? If the MLB ever expanded to Jacksonville do you think a team would survive here?

Can't see it. Not with Jax being predominantly a football town. The Suns have a nice following, that's only a fraction of butts in seats an MLB game would require.

Football in the south is way different than baseball.  You think the football team gets flack for not putting enough butts in the seats, baseball would be atrocious.

It would take another million people in population to even stand a chance. Most Suns games I have attended are about half capacity average. Apples to oranges I realize but simply not enough people in the area.

Would be kinda cool but wont happen. Even larger market cities struggle with attendance I cant imagine how difficult it would be for J-ville to put 35-40k people in a basebal stadium 82 times a year.

 

I think a big problem is owners want these giant stadiums that can hold the max amount of people possible. It's becomming so much easier to watch at home. Why can't a baseball stadium hold 20-25k similar to basketball?

Yeah, not only that....but you could also face the issue of some people choosing between the 2 teams (Jags/ pro baseball team) for their season tickets. At a time where they are trying to fix the Jags' problems selling tix, (and seem to be on the way to succeeding)....adding a pro baseball team wouldn't be the a great thing for them.

I'd guess that amount of attendance is not profitable enough. 

 

Around 40,000 would be the minimum capacity in baseball.

No, not for baseball. Professional soccer, like the MLS (do the NASL teams have the opportunity to move up?) - yes.

 

I still remember the Jacksonville Cyclones many years ago. I think the times have changed and soccer has garnered enough fan interest to support such a team.

Cities like Miami, Tampa, Seattle and Cleveland struggle to support MLB franchises. Would be an absolute disaster here. Stick with the Suns.

No, it seems like people all over the world are moving to Jacksonville, I doubt many of them care about baseball.  As for the Armada moving to MLS:

With Orlando getting an MLS franchise, it will make it more difficult. But no reason we can't be one of the more successful NASL teams and at least get in the conversation.

Not really.  The predominate mindset in 1993 was that Jacksonville was a football crazy town.  The city had long supported the UF/UGA and Gator Bowl games, and lead the USFL in attendance supporting the Bulls.  The fans even came out and supported the Sharks and the Express from previous minor league football efforts. 

 

Baseball is a completely different story. 

 

I don't think we could do any worse than the Marlins have in the past when it comes to drawing fans.  But, I don't think there's a hunger there to do so for 81 games.  I think the minor league venue, particularly in the double A realm is a perfect fit for Jacksonville. You see the top prospects, and you get to enjoy it in a very laid back environment.
