Quote:I know. The book describes Tyrion's reaction to the taunting wonderfully.

That reaction, and the actual way that Oberyn was dispatched and the words that The Mountain used, are upsetting me that they were deleted.

Then you had better go ahead and stop watching now.

I've actually finished the last book he wrote, "A Dance of Dragons".  I dedicated myself to the maxim that if he kills one certain character, I'm just going to stop caring and skip the last two he has yet to write to complete the series.

I think I have stopped caring now.

To me the most annoying thing in his books has been man's inhumanity to man.  I mean, just how many ways are there to torture someone?  And one other thing - with all this death and destruction, who's doing the farming, distributing the goods, and taking out the garbage anyway?  Magic and dragons and ice revenants aside, it's just getting bloody unbelievable.

That being said, he did have me for 5 books.  Advantage: Martin.

Well, in real life people die whether you like them or not. Honestly it is a breath of fresh air for a show or book for that matter to have the stones to do it. No one is safe and the reason why it makes the show or book unpredictable.

I agree, and I'm not sure why they would change it. It's not like the scene was not gory enough already. Here is what the Mountain said in the book:

Quote:“‘Elia of Dorne,’ they all heard Ser Gregor say, when they were close enough to kiss. His deep voice boomed within the helm. ‘I killed her screaming whelp.’ He thrust his free hand into Oberyn’s unprotected face, pushing steel fingers into his eyes. ‘Then I raped her.’ Clegane slammed his fist into the Dornishman’s mouth, making splinters of his teeth. ‘Then I smashed her [BAD WORD REMOVED] head in. Like this.’ As he drew back his huge fist, the blood on his gauntlet seemed to smoke in the cold dawn air. There was a sickening crunch.”

Tyrion's trial is in A Storm of Swords, the third book of the series.

The HBO series is in book three. A Song of Ice and Fire is currently up to five novels and two more in the works.

Martin has been quoted as saying "No matter what I come up with, history has already done something even worse."

Yeah, that was one of the more gory scenes in a show that isn't afraid to go there.

With the way the show is going, there's no way there won't be some form of spoilers to us book readers in the next season.

Sansa in the show is pretty much already past what we know of her in the books.

Theon and Ramsay look as though they are heading to Winterfell, and they are basically rapidly pushing that story along.

I understand they can't do what GRRM did and just leave characters and stories out for an entire season, or multiple ones at that, but I'm really starting to think that I might have to stop watching the show, especially if certain things start to happen that I imagine are going to be happening in the upcoming books. I definitely don't want to be spoiled to anything in the upcoming books whatsoever.

One thing I can't wait for in the show though, and I hope they do add and stay as true as possible to the books with is...
Lady Stoneheart
I watch the show and haven't read the books, but for me personally, I'm not as concerned with my favorite characters getting whacked so much as I'm concerned that the various story arcs eventually intersect and there is some resolution of the threads into a coherent whole.  Since this series is so literary I hope it will be able to resolve in some sort of satisfying ending.  If the white walkers eventually take over, kill everyone, and we never understand their motivation...well, that will just feel very unsatisfying.

What a way to end the season, who the hell was that kid and what the hell is the deal with the tree? I read online about the Lady Stoneheart character I'd be interested to see that played out. Loved the Tyrion Arc was very satisfying indeed. I wonder if the Hound is really dead, not seeing him die on screen seems like he could come back, I really started to like his character.

I've read the entire series, but have not taken enough acid in my life to understand what that tree is all about.
