Quote:I AM hooked on the Basil Hayden's bourbon but left it in Massachusetts when I came to Fl for the summer in June (I did pick up a small bottle of Woodford Reserve for the occasional taste). I'm back on the tequila for the summer months (Hornitos Reposado right now) plus the occasional vodka (no preference to brand, I buy a cheap one like Seagram's, Fleischman's or Gordon's, they are all the same to me). My two favorite sipping aged rums are Ron Zacapa and Diplimatico. Flor de Cana 18 is quite good as well. Kraken and sailor jerry are a step up from capt Morgan but that's a smsll step up from a low place B) We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Thanks, I will try to find one of them here in St. Augustine Beach. I'm not much on the spiced rums and the big commercial names aren't very interesting.
I've paid $29-$33/bottle for Basil Hayden's at home (Boston area) and saw it here today for $45-. Ouch. I let it stay on the shelf and grabbed more tequila instead.

NYC- I managed to find a bottle of both the Ron Zacapa and Diplomatico rums at the local ABC liquor. The RZ was about 44- and the Diplomatico about 19- so...I went with the Diplo (the RZ price would pretty much pay for this winter's Talisker scotch back in Boston.
You were right, the Diplomatico is very good and just what I was looking for- thanks yet again.

Bourbon-Basil Hayden's
Rum- Diplomatico Scotch- Talisker Vodka- I still can't differentiate between vodkas, they all taste the same to me so I just buy a cheap, generic 1.75 L bottle like Gordon's, Seagram's, Fleischmann's etc. I just put it with tonic water or cranberry anyway so a quality product would be lost on me Tequila- Hornitos Reposado Canadian- no favorite here, suggestions? Irish- either Jameson or Bushmill, any suggestions?

I like the idea that a fair amount of bars here in FL have PBR 16 oz cans for $2. I'll drink it every time over a $3.50 Bud/Miller/Coors product or a $4.50-5.50 craft beer.
The bars are killing the women on the wine prices, IMO (Senor F, do you agree?) at 6.50-8.50/glass so the PBRs at $2 average things down for a round.

Wine has such a varied price range it's hard to say for sure without knowing exactly what it is, but when xJAGGYx and I were going over wines earlier this year I was pretty shocked by your local prices there. A few of the bottles I suggested for him were like triple what we pay here for them locally. $6-8 for a glass of Napa wine would be normal here. A house bottle would probably be $3-5. Wine from South America should be in that $3-5 range but somehow it gets passed off as exotic and I see them being priced higher and higher all the time.
I was surprised by wine prices in Sonoma a couple of years ago; I expected them to be very inexpensive but found the opposite (of course, I didn't know the Cool places to shop). Even at the wineries, it was as expensive to buy it there as opposed to any outlet back home so why bother lugging it around.
That being said, every dollar spent hanging around the tasting rooms in Sonoma (and on a subsequent trip to Oregon) was money well spent. Tasting something and really liking it followed by a bottle purchase, then hanging out on the deck overlooking the vineyards while an acoustic guitar player did his/her thing (as you drained the bottle and maybe another) was very enjoyable. I was in a bar at home and my friend got a glass of chardonnay- the bartender picked up a bottle of Barefoot and poured the glass. She set it down and I asked her how much it was- she said $6.50. Are you kidding me? For Barefoot chardonnay, a truly vile wine? I refused it. Obviously, this wasn't the classiest of bars but that is price gouging for sure. I have no problem paying that money for a quality glass of wine but Barefoot?

And that's wayyyyyyyyy too much for that stuff. But yeah, Sonoma and Napa aren't ever going to be especially cheap. Especially, if you go to the well-known places like V. Sattui. I'm sure as you probably realized, you're paying for the experience as much as for the wine. When I began my career, the Paso Robles area was making really good wine for a decent price but they've garnered enough success now that they're just as expensive as Napa/Sonoma. I think at the moment that Oregon wine gets you the most bang for your buck, but I don't think I could name even one label. CRU Wine Company is very local to me and they have started getting some recognition for some really good wines, without being crazy crazy expensive yet. It's been over six days since I've had a drink.
Six! Days! I'm actually starting to become [shudder] sober!
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
