My brother the house painter gave me a long harangue in support of a flat tax and how it would "broaden the tax base." I told him that means I would pay less in taxes while he would pay more. He didn't know what to say about that.

 

That's why I wouldn't tax food, household products, and other essentials.  It encourages the poor to buy things essential for themselves and their children instead of wasting money on luxuries and then becoming dependent on the government because of it.  The poor wouldn't be able to afford many luxuries, but they would be able to afford more food than they ever have, assuming other libertarian ideas are also adopted in conjunction.

It's as if someone saying the gaping hole in the wall being used as a door because it's closer to the road  needs to be sealed is somehow wrong in stating it needs to be sealed if they walked in through it.

I'm all for everyone, corporations included, to pay their taxes. You agree? It's not ok for Warren Buffet or anyone else. The problem, however, is systemic. These loopholes people keep opining over are no different than the same loopholes most Americans take advantage of with their taxes.  If you own a house, you've got loopholes covering your taxes and mortgage interest.  You've got loopholes for child care, education, and medical expenses.  You've got loopholes for your 401(k).  You've got loopholes for dependents.  If you own your own business, you've got loopholes for your expenses like fuel and travel.  I think people just hear a word and immediately think it's evil or corrupt.  Corporations aren't doing anything illegal by looking for every possible way to reduce their tax liability just as individuals are not when they make charitable donations to cut their tax liabilities.  Congress talks a good game, but they're not taking any of those loopholes away.

Why than people wouldn't be able to afford their services. In a true free market the goal would be for as many as possible to be wealthy as that's the condition for exchange of services.
