This "trade Shorts" thing is absolutely a broken record.  

 

BTW - Mike Brown's drops per target has easily been a higher number than your favorite punching bag Marcedes Lewis.  I like Brown - but drops are an issue - and if he finds himself on the bubble - that'll be why. 

 

Either way - I'm not worried about the receivers. We'll have a good - if a bit green - group this year.

Brown drops too many, I agree. That showed up (again) in the first game. But then again, CS3 isn't exactly mr sure hands, either. He has his share of drops, especially in 2013. 

 

IMO, Brown is probably the "worst" of a WR corps of Lee/ Robinson/ Hurns/ Taylor/ Doss/ Brown.... IMO. So, again, I'm not worried in that case. 

 

Trading Shorts for OL help, especially now considering our newfound depth at the position as well as his pending contract upgrade is just smart business.

I think all these 3 are legit WR that can contribute steadily and within roles. Hurns could be the one who legitimately could be a 1000 yard (5-10 TD) per season guy though.

While you 'think' the other guys are capable receivers, only Shorts has SHOWN that he is a capable NFL receiver.

Given where we are....there isn't a better time than now to deal him, if they chose to go that route. We're not expecting to contend this year and any repetitions Brown/ Hurns/ Taylor get will become valuable in their development for future years. 

 

Plus all 3 are vastly cheaper than what Shorts will cost (with his pending contract re-signing). 

 

I don't see Shorts as the kind of player you re-sign to big money. He's not a dominating WR1 type. IMO, you draft and develop the kind of replacements for Shorts and can do so effectively. You keep/ re-sign the Demaryus Thomas/ Dez Bryant/ AJ Green types. 

 

If we can get that San Fran OG in exchange for Shorts, you do it. 

 

Shorts isn't going to be traded. Caldwell is already trying to get him re-signed as I type this I believe if I am not mistaken. And I also feel that it won't be to some kind of "back-breaking" deal either that he'll get. He's not a consistent primary receiver. We already knew that. That's why we drafted Blackmon a couple of years ago. In the few games we saw Justin play, he really did show you what a dominating WR1 could look like. In turn, had he not screwed us over, and more importantly, his life up, him and Shorts could have been a strong tandem for years to come. We have Lee to look forward to now. We still haven't even seen his 2nd round selected classmate out on the field with him yet as well.

 

But I don't see the point in trading Shorts at this point. He's not a troublemaker, he's a respectable receiver, he's just constantly nagged with injuries which gives Caldwell the leverage he needs to sign him to a fair and favorable deal that won't cripple us down the road. Ultimately, we're back to where we were three years ago. Sanders wasn't a game changer by any means last year as well, and with him already out with a substance abuse problem it's beginning to look more and more like he may not be back after his rookie contract is up. Shorts/Lee/Robinson/Hurns/Sanders/???? is how it looks like now. Taylor and Brown's competition will come down to final cuts IMHO.
