Hurns is a gem of a find.  Tremendous asset when we needed help most with all the injuries.  That gave him the opportunity to make this roster, and with authority.

 

Heres the thing.....if this draft wasn't as deep at WR as it was, theres no way Hurns falls all the way to where we got him at.

It's strange. Even in a deep WR class it doesn't make a lot of sense. If it were a weak WR class where would he have gone - 5th round? That still seems a bit low for a record-breaking WR at a major college program who has good size, good hands, and can run routes. No character issues either. 

 

Does it simply come down to the fact that he isn't the fastest, quickest, or more physical player? But lots of guys get drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds who meet that definition. Jarvis Landry, anyone? (Not meaning to single Landry out - it's just one quick example because I'm not going to compile a list of 25 players)

He has looked good. But we have a guy like this every camp. Cortez Hankton, Kevin Elliott, Nate Hughes. It's a long list.

 

Difference being, this one was starting against opposing first team players and making plays.

The TD from Bortles to Hurns was a great play.  

 

Hurns sold the CB that he was going deep, then stopped and the ball was right there.  It was a great route!  I like Hurns alot!

Not so sure it had as much to do with the depth of the draft, as much as Hurns doesn't wow with any measurables.  But the one thing he's exceptional at is getting open/competing one on one with DBs.

No, you can't draft in hindsight.  Teams will throw a grade of UDFA on a Hurns and roll the dice after the draft, unless they've "fallen in love" with him and spend a six or seventh to ensure they get first look.

 

This is the case of the diamond in the rough.  Like Tom Brady, tons of guys passed on him for valid reasons.

 

He simply beat the odds.  Nothing more, nothing less.

 

You can't redraft in hindsight and put a round on him.

 

He drafted where his scout grade placed him.

Hurns, Lee, and Robinson has made it okay for the most talented Jaguar to never suit up again for us in Blackmon. I feel that confident in them

Another factor is Hurns really only had one impressive season in college (his last one). The others were very pedestrian. 

 

Whatever the reasoning, I don't care. I'm just glad we have him now.

I actually just posted something similar....but left out the combine stuff which was a good point by you......so many teams stupidly put too much of an emphasis on combine crap. 

 

Hurns is just the latest example to show how worthless that crap is and that actual tape should trump combine garbage 100% of the time.

Yeah, SHaron & Hankton had a few big plays that skewed their preseasons, too. 

 

Hurns is simply being CONSISTENTLY good in his play. There really have been few single stand out plays by Hurns - just a TON of quality, good ones.

He does have decent size for the position, but to compare him to Marcedes is beyond way off. 

 

 

I also don't agree with the Irvin comparisons. I mean, maybe its me, but Hurns doesn't seem as if he's overly physical out there which WR like Irvin (and Blackmon) are/ were. 

 

Hurns just seems to be a saavy route runner who has a knack for getting open and does all the little things right. 

 

He has proved (so far) though, that he is indeed tough. He took a helmet to helmet shot and got right back up last night. (I hope that Detroit player gets fined btw - so tired of the poor defensive tackling technique that causes some of these helmet to helmet hits)

Hurns looks like our version of Dez Bryant. The fact he was a really late pick makes us look genius. Cecil is going to have to earn his contract.

He wasn't drafted. That's why he's such a gem.
