Bortles Concerns

#21

Quote:After watching Bortles against the one's here I think he'll benefit from some time on the bench. He's certainly a gamer though and I really love his tendency to not go down on the first hit.

But really, what's he going to learn on the bench?

It's weird, so if players get better by not playing, then why do QB's always get better the more seasons they play?

Jamarcus Russell sat. Brian Brohm sat. Vince Young sat. Tim Tebow sat. Matt Leinart sat. These are just off the top of my head.

What I love about people saying he should sit is they will throw the "But but but Gabbert" as if Gabbert ever showed 1/100 of what Bortles has shown.

Because the NFL slows down for good players towards the end of their first year in the league. The recent slate of immediate starters are on teams that are already pretty darn good, this team is not like that yet. Look at Geno Smith with that merry band of losers last year, the Jets fans wanted him gone. Heck, look at the tripe on this board last night about under performing draft picks who haven't play a single real game yet. You want to subject Bortles to that kind of BS the first time he throws a two pick game when you don't have to yet? Nope, get him past the wall and then move him in.

And McNair sat. And Palmer sat. And Rogers sat. Young sat for two different teams. Brady sat. Peyton played and was terrible. Little brother sat and won two Super Bowls because the team around developed. In every case the coaches made a decision whether or not to sit the guy based on where the team was at the moment, not the quality of the prospect sitting on the bench.

Bortles might sit a few games!?! RRAAGGGEEE!

The coaches/FO were smart enough to pick him. His development/play has exceeded (at least my) expectations. I trust the people in charge of this to sit or play him as they deem fit.
Huh

No he isnt Joe Montana in his 3rd preseason game.  But these concerns are trivial at this point.  The guy has looked really good... period.  But he has looked phenomenally great for a rookie.

It can get that way. I trust the coaching staff to know what's best. I'm not going to jump off the Modis over it.

he certainly showed more of his rookie against the starters (couple backfoot throws and 3 passes that probably should have been picked) but he also held his own and this is a great learning expiernce for him.

He slipped? Clearly this proves he's a bust. We better pick Jameis next draft.

It's certainly interesting. I've watched him since the beginning at UCF and I have NEVER seen him slip like that. Now it's three games in a row. I'm assuming it has to do with him adjusting to the new footwork mechanics.

Do you remember which game it was? If he has slipped before it definitely didn't happen often

maybe it has to do with weak calves or some other leg/foot muscle that is under developed and not used to the footwork they are trying to implement. Will be something to keep an eye because eventually a slip like that is gonna cost him.
