He's going to get his playing time this year. I'd much rather see that happen when we know the line is up to the task of protecting him. That's not the case right now.

The line is decent. The problem is Chad doesn't know how to maneuver or navigate the pocket, while scanning the field. So he hurries and makes check downs, especially when things start breaking down. That is why his YPA are so low and why he tends to get sacked more frequently. The line excuse is one of the oldest excuses in Jaguars history. Good QBs can overcome very average lines.

It's a lot easier to score points when you get chunks of 15+ yards multiple times on drives. That's what the good teams do. Even when this team was mediocre with DG, they never got over the hump because you can't consistently sustain long drives.

You do realize there is a real possibility that they could announce Bortles the starter next week - or week two - or week three, right? 

 

It seems odd to me that you act as if this Henne thing is carved in stone.  They aren't going to announce their intention to supplant him until they are about to do it.  It seems perfectly reasonable to me for a team to at least know who in the hell their starting O line is before announcing such a move.

I think you'll get what we all want much sooner than you are letting on.

Those 15+ yard chunks come a heck of a lot easier in the preseason against fairly vanilla defenses. 

 

Take a deep breath and relax.  As NYC has already said, Bortles will start this year.  Try not to impale yourself waiting for that to happen.

Umm.... He would be watching game film anyway? His routine really wont be much difft if he is starting, that's what people arent grasping. He's gonna get reps/watch film either way.

Unlike yourself, I have never played in the NFL. However I'm going to guess its a little easier to soak it in when you're not worried about that 300 pound man coming at you at 95mph , because some internet genius decided taking a few extra games for things to fall into place meant nothing!

Bortles looks good for the time he's in against the 2's and 3's, but we all saw him get sacked hard against a strong rush. This line may be almost decent for a quarter or so of football, but I don't trust them to protect any QB for an entire 4 quarters. New Center, young guards, basically a Rookie LT coming back off an injury, a RT who got his job because Paztor was injured?  Who in their right mind would throw a promising young QB who's still learning footwork and a new playbook into a season behind that kind of an O-Line?

Oh, yeah, Jack DelRio would, but JDR doesn't coach here anymore.

Bortles will start when the coaching staff think he's ready. I don't think they could make that any clearer.


And starting Henne for a few games will have little impact on our chances of winning the Super Bowl this season...

I spoke to someone inside the organization this morning and he said that with Pasztor injured, and the shuffling of the line at center, the coaching staff does not want to risk it with Bortles. His timetable is pretty much to start at some point, and that the date has probably accelerated a bit based on his preseason performance. Still, they also recognize that things ramp up to a completely different level in the regular season, and they want him to see the difference before throwing him out there.
