When I watch the video posted in the thread I see a lot of what looks to be half field reads, with a high/low option. And if those aren't open he takes off. I also see some spotty accuracy and some footwork issues.

Yes, I realize it's one video for those that like to point that out. I'm not trying to make bold proclamations about his pro potential, just discussing what my very amateur eyes see in the video posted.


He kinda reminds me of Cam Newton as a passer.

  

At times, he also struggles with accuracy, especially downfield, on several occasions missing an wide open WR. While, as many of you have eluded to he does suffer from a lot of drops, he also equally misses open receivers a lot of times.


Also, he throws off of his back foot so often, even on plays where he isn't rushed and doesn't really need to, if he continues that in the NFL, he will have absolutely no chance. While he does at times look off of his first WR, he moves through his reads EXTREMELY slowly and looks more and more uncomfortable as the play goes on. Luckily, he usually has all day to throw, so this doesn't effect him much at the college level.


Overall, he lacks a lot of polish and tries to escape the pocket early a lot of times, so I can certainly see where TMD would compare him to Gabbert. d.

Its the perfect storm of crap - 

 

Measureables + arm strength + 40 time + video game numbers due to gimmick offense...

 

Add in some irrelevant highlights like the 70 yard TD run straight up the gut from the pocket (that would NEVER happen in the NFL) and you have dolts buying into Mariota. I just hope Caldwell isn't one of them. 

 

Bridgewater has the stuff that really matters and is time-tested.

   You and I see relatively the same thing. However, I don't see many similarities to Gabbert.

He's extremely similar as a PROSPECT to Gabbert, although he is probably more of a plus athlete, which makes him much more likely to succeed. Keep in mind though that Gabbert was at one point a top 10 pick and there was some buzz that he could go #1 overall pre-draft. It's not that crazy of a comparison. The knock on Gabbet coming out was that he came from a gimmicky system, had poor footwork and at times perceived a phantom rush and took off too early from the pocket. Mariotta is 3/3 right there. The argument in favor of Gabbert was that he was a great athlete, had a strong arm and would be a "project" that could succeed in the right situation. Again, similar arguments are being made for Mariotta.

The more I see of these other QB and the more I read and research the more it points to there really only being one clear choice for QB in this draft and its Teddy Bridgewater. If the Jags don't get the top pick, they aren't getting him, and if the Jags don't get him, this "rebuilding" isn't going far.

I think that there is a huge step down between Teddy and the other prospects, but there are a few others that could one day be potential starters. For my money, the only QB's I would be comfortable with starting day 1 are Bridgewater, Boyd and maybe McCarron, but he doesn't have the ceiling of guys like Mariotta or Hundley.

Mariota puts up huge numbers for a high scoring Oregon offense that poorly translates to an NFL offense.

 

Bridgewater is being belittled with the comparison.

 

I literally think the only reason why people keep bringing up Hundley and Mariota is because they are getting bored of talking about Teddy. They crave controversy.

Like a lot of posters on this forum, you drastically overrate this football team. I don't know if you fell into the trap because of the Denver game or what. Maybe this will help put it back into perspective;

You have to keep in mind that the first four games were without Blackmon and weighted our stats down heavily. Since he has returned were averaging something like 360 yards of offense.

 

EDIT: That being said, I do think that Caldwell legitimately wants to tank and I wouldn't be surprised with a few mystery injuries and other shenanigans here and there.
