The Blake Bortles Effect

Quote:What was the biggest upset in NCAA history?

I always thought Chad Henne was good at Michigan except when he played against the Buckeyes, who beat him all four years.

Did you read the other posts in the thread? It's already been explained that he lost to Appalachian State JW.

Quote:It's pretty funny how this is the post you choose to reply to, compared to the many posts after this one, even the ones after the post you originally made in this thread.

Honestly, what makes you post? You clearly don't post based off of legit football knowledge, so where do you get your opinions from?

Like I know you are a Jags fan and you love football, but still, you don't post based off of very good understanding of the game/team/surroundings.

I fully understand football is the ultimate team sport. No player can do his job by himself - not even the punter. There is a reason teams have coordinators for the offense and defense, not just position group assistants: they have to work together.

It would help a lot if this message board had a Football 101 forum for questions like how do quarterbacks audible and what is zone blocking. But I know more than a lot of women just by watching games, reading articles, and posting here.

I don't always read every post before replying to one. Yes, I did know about that game, but I forgot Chad Henne was the quarterback.

Understandable and I do the same. I'd also forgotten that.

Did he really never beat OSU while at Michigan?

Quote:How is the rest of the young offense, particularly the WRs, supposed to develop with Chad Henne at QB?!  This is the one thing that has never made a lick of sense to me with the staff sitting Bortles.  I've heard it mentioned that they want the "environment" around Blake to grow and be ready for him.  How in the world is a WR going to develop to a respectable level with a guy that can't play the QB position at an even average level on a regular basis?  If we had a respectable veteran playing I would be much more inclined to agree with sitting Bortles.

CSIII developed just fine (barring his injury issues which are unrelated to the guy taking snaps) with Gabbert and Henne.

That being said, I think the real reason behind keeping Bortles on the bench was shown yesterday. If our o-line is going to be allowing that many sacks on the QB, then they'd rather it be Henne than Bortles. You can argue that Bortles would be able to avoid those sacks all you want, but ultimately, that determination remains with Bradley.

“It just shows what kind of team we are. We’re a tough team. We like contact. We’re very physical. We want the issue to be brought to us so we can show people we can stand up to it and overcome it. Seeing that’s just a symbol of our team and who we are.” - Jaguars DT Malik Jackson

Quote:Oops... you meant Blake Bortles giving us the best chance to win right?
Yes? Why the confusion? I said "he", in a topic created about Blake Bortles.

Here's a summary from Wik on Henne's college career.  He definitely did some good things, definitely did some bad things.  Kinda sounds like Henne.

College career<span style="color:rgb(85,85,85);margin-left:0px;">[edit]</span>
<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">In 2004, Henne entered the 2004 college football season as a freshman for the Wolverines, and third on the depth chart behindredshirt sophomore Matt Gutierrez and redshirt freshman quarterback Clayton Richard. The Monday prior to the season opener against Miami, Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr announced Gutierrez would start even though he was suffering from a sore shoulder. A few days later Carr decided to allow Henne to start in relief of Gutierrez.[9]

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">Henne ended his first career game with a 43–10 win, completing 14 of 24 passes for 142 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Henne was just the second <a class="" href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_freshman' title="True freshman">true freshman</a> in Michigan history to start on opening day, a feat not seen at Michigan since <a class="" href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Leach_(baseball_player)' title="Rick Leach (baseball player)">Rick Leach</a> in 1975.[2]

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">Alongside freshman running back Mike Hart, he galvanized an explosive offensive unit that featured receivers Braylon EdwardsJason Avant, and Steve Breaston. (All five would later go on to the <a class="" href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL' title="NFL">NFL</a>.) Henne's freshman season was highlighted by a triple-overtime win over in-state rival Michigan State[10] and a record-tying performance in the Rose Bowlagainst Texas.[11] He also tied the Michigan season record for touchdown passes with 25, first set by Elvis Grbac in 1991.[12]

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">Henne was criticized in 2005 after Michigan, ranked in the top five of the preseason polls, stumbled to a 3–3 start. The sophomore quarterback was particularly scrutinized after his performance in a close loss to Notre Dame, in which he completed fewer than half of his pass attempts and lost a fumble on the goal line. After their 3–3 start, Michigan won four consecutive games to clinch the program's 21st consecutive winning season.

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">As a junior in 2006, Henne earned Rivals.com All-American third-team honors. He was a Manning Award finalist, Maxwell Award semifinalist, Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist and Walter Camp Award candidate. The All-Big Ten Conference second-team choice started all thirteen games. He hit on 203-of-328 passes for 2,508 yards and 22 touchdowns with eight interceptions, ranking fifth in U-M's season record list for touchdown passes, eighth in attempts and completions and tenth in passing yards. For the third straight year Michigan concluded their season by losing to Ohio State and then dropping their bowl game, this time to Southern California.[12]

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">During his senior year in 2007, Henne completed 162 of 278 passes for 1,938 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The first game of the season ended in disaster for U-M, a loss to Appalachian State that was considered one of the biggest sports upsets of all time. In the following game Henne suffered a knee injury in the first half against Oregon, and sat out the second half, as well as subsequent games against Notre Dame and Penn State, before returning to the starting lineup against Northwestern. In the final regular season game, U-M fell to Ohio State 14-3, completing an 0-4 career record for Henne and fellow seniors Mike Hart and Jake Long against the Buckeyes. Henne played his final college game against Florida in the Capital One Bowl. Henne was named the MVP of the game after he led his team to a 41–35 victory over the Gators and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow.

<p style="color:rgb(37,37,37);font-familyConfusedans-serif;font-size:14px;">For his career, Henne completed 828 of 1,387 passes for 9,715 yards, 87 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions.[13] All five marks are school records. Henne's passing touchdown total is second in Big Ten Conference history.

Quote:Honestly this perfectly sums up the entire situation all on its own.

Indeed and is the reason we just need to start BB5.  We know Henne and what he gives us.  He doesn't provide anything to the offense.  BB5 may not give us the "best chance to win", but I think BB5 does give us the best chance to stay competitive.

Quote:We aren't playing preseason games anymore.

In the preseason the O-line looked like a solid pass blocking unit and the defensive front 7 looked unstoppable. The preseason isn't necessarily a very accurate measuring stick.

I disagree.  There were many times where the O-Line failed in pass protection.  BB5 was very good at evading the sack when a free rusher came through the line on several occassion during the pre-season.

Quote:I think JW is a troll or just plain stupid. One of the two. Nothing she posts makes sense.

JW is an awesome poster!  You just need to figure out her style.  Once you do, you will look forward to reading threads she's conversing in.   Smile
