Golf Club Clones

Not sure if there's a minimum club count, PF.

Like Rico and others -  I've also become a hybrid user.  I started with just a 3 Iron Hybrid, but after liking it so much went ahead and got the 4 iron H as well. (Callaway Razr)

Last summer -  after just having a round during which I had to hit my second shot out of the rough on 3 of the par fives - I got the 2H.

The 3W would get there - but not from the rough.   The 3H - would get the ball out of the lie but come up short.  I bought a 17 degree 2H. I love it.  It gets me pin-high on that second shot more often than I was able to achieve before adding it.

It'll go 200+ from a bad lie and is great off the tee on short par fours when driver is unnecessary. (Couldn't find a Callaway to match the 3 and 4 so I went with a used Mizuno JPX 825)

I love the hybrids, too. I can shoot at the green now more often than not instead of shooting for down front, then chipping and putting. We play a lot of scramble now and my partner is not a big hitter so he'll play safe and I can just bomb away with abandon. Makes it a lot of fun- sometimes I look like a star, other times not so much. I find the clones which I have here to be as good as the Taylor Rescue hybrid (3H I think) I have at home in Boston.

I'm definitely moving toward using the driver only on wide open tee shots. The hybrids do get me out there in good position without the risks inherent in (my) driving.

Putters are funny like someone said (Rashean27?) above. I've tried several but keep going back to the old Wilson mallet with the rubber insert face.

I have an older Ping anser putter that I've attempted to upgrade twice.  Tried a bunch of putters at store - bought one of them - played two rounds with it - sold it on eBay - went back to old putter.  Twice I did this.

I've come to the conclusion that I love my putter, I just have to remind myself occasionally.  :teehee:

Played at Eagle Harbor yesterday on the Jags offer- it was 24- to play. Course was great and is good shape and we had a good round. $24- to play a course of that caliber is mind-boggling to me. At home we pay twice that to play courses that you guys would just sneeze at (although there is the red and orange foliage, rock walls, hills and boulders to contend with which make it interesting).

I like to have 4 wedges too as chances are most of my shots will be around the edge of the green so I like to have a good selection of lofts.

Hybrids are great too.

I'd like to take a couple of lessons on play around the green. I'm OK off the tee and the hybrids have changed everything for 2nd and 3rd shots. I can 2 putt anything but would like to be deadly with those 4 wedges.

I've incorporated the "bump and run" quite a bit around the green.  I'm a decent chipper with the sand wedge - but I've learned to use the PW or 9I to bump and run when the green is uphill a bit or just not very fast.  It's saving me strokes.  Mostly because I haven't mastered a flop shot yet.

(most of my woes are from the tee or second shot as I have an outside-in swing with the longer clubs that's I've yet to correct)

Luke Donald has some cool video clinics on  short game that I found somewhat helpful.

Haven't played Eagle Harbor yet.  Look forward to checking it out sometime down the road. There are deals to be had about the area down there on some amazing courses.  During the summer you can find some really great deals at World Golf Village.  I'd imagine their prices rise around late September though.

I'll be in Jax in two weeks and I'm looking forward to getting a round in somewhere as the season is nearly over up here.

Love playing bump and run around the green. It's become almost a long put for me. Then again, as erratic ad my long irons and hybrids can be, I'd better be pretty good around the green. I like a 7-iron or, most often, an 8-iron. As a matter of fact the grip on my 8 wears out faster than any club because I use it so much.

Maybe we could try to put together a MB 'tournament' when you are down?

I'll be down Oct 23-27.  Might could get a round in early that Sat. the 25th  (have a 4pm wedding thing near Amelia Island)

I'll also be down for the Dec 18 Thurs. night game and will likely be in town several days before and a few after. (maybe 13-20th)

We're a foursome in this thread  already if *PF and HB can find time.

My friend and I took off after the 12/18 game as well and were already planning on playing.

I could probably swing an early round on the 25th if we could all swing it.

I'm out. The 25th is my daughter's birthday and I'm scheduled to be on travel in December.

Welp….. I'm still down to play with any of you gents (< using loosely)  when the opportunity presents itself.

10/25  or  12/19 -  or whenever we can eventually make it happen.

Sounds good but I can't fit the dates easily either. My son is coming for the MIA game and we return to NE right after that. Then I'm here 11/29-12/9 for the NYG/HOU games, then 12/21-1/1, then return to NE for the winter.

I just remembered something relevant to this discussion that I neglected to recall earlier.

My friend in Jax has a back-up bag of clubs I often use when in town and it includes a knock-off brand 3H.  I can't remember the brand, but I hit it longer and straighter than my Callaway Razr 3H.  I'm sure my buddy got it from Jim Laudenslager - who specializes in custom fitting his customers with a variety of the clones and other off brand clubs of that nature.

I'll check the brand and specifics when I'm down there this weekend and post them later.  I remember hitting it at a 205 yd par 3 at PV Inn and Club Lagoon course and flying the green by 10 yards.  (10 - 15 yds longer than my Callaway and straighter too)

I played at the LPGA course in Daytona yesterday, another fabulous course joining Palencia, North Hampton and Eagle Harbor on the list of great courses I've been lucky enough to play this year. Tomorrow it's back to normal at the Palatka GC.

I saw a brief video online somewhere with Fuzzy Zoeller showing how to hit a hybrid. It was interesting but I loved his line at the end about how a well hit hybrid is "almost like cheating." I feel the same way often as I'd never been able to get consistent results with a 3i/4i but I can often smack a similar hybrid 180-210 yards.

Yesterday we were up one hole on the 17th and my partner slapped a 100 yarder off the tee well right and I "boomed" a 30 yarder just short of the red tees. The other guys got out about 220. We hit our seconds from his lie (maybe 370 par 4) and I rocketed a 3H out of there about 220 yards. This would never happen with a 3I.

(He then hit the green and we 2 putted to halve the hole).

Have you played Amelia National or Osprey Cove? Two of my faves. And if you're willing to drive to LPGA (I've played several times on both courses) try Halifax Plantation.

From the courses you listed above...do you have The Executive Card?

Yes, I got the Executive card free through the Jaguars offer which came with the ST. The guys I usually play with have it.

I did play Amelia Nat'l 2 years ago and it was terrific but have never made it up to Osprey Cove. I've played maybe 3 times at Halifax and like it there too but it isn't on the level of the courses above.

I don't mind playing almost anywhere- Palatka, River Bend in Green Cove, the Royal St. Aug in SA...the only place I found a little rough was Cecil Field but for the cost (maybe $16-18) it was just fine to bang around on after an airport run to JIA.

Ick. Royal St. Augustine isn't for me. Very nice course but a little too narrow for my liking. You ever play Cimarrone? My friend and I played with a single at Cimarrone a couple of months ago from Palatka. (Not that you're the only golfer in Palatka)

I met a guy tailgating Sunday who actually said he loved Royal SA- first one I've ever heard that from. I kinda like it there b/c it's a different game and I don't bring a driver. I've learned to pick and poke my way around it. That being said, I don't go out of my way to play it but I do enjoy it- I like to go to River Bend in GCS one day, find a bunch of balls and then lose them at RSA 2 days later.

RSA has a special attraction for me in that I have a condo there (rented, I don't live there) and an unattached garage which I use and the tenants don't know about- it is in a group of 4 garages just off the 12th green and makes a wonderful place to ditch a few beers for the final holes.

I played Cimarron this past Monday for the first time in the 15 years I've been coming here and I liked it. Again, it's not on the level of the other courses but I liked how you could blast away yet there was lots of trouble if you threw caution to the wind. I managed to get into 4 sand traps there which is rare for me. I thought the 18th green with its surrounding sand and grass traps and water to be a beautiful finishing hole.
