Fanbase Research Project; Everyone please chime in!

(This post was last modified: 10-23-2014, 10:38 AM by PantherPride95.)

I'm conducting a research project for my college writing class where I have to collect raw data and then piece it together in order to show a correlation with "identity." Each class member was able to choose any subject that related to how people identify themselves or how identities are shaped through associations, places, life events, etc. The topic I chose was how Americans identify with professional football teams.

The purpose of this post is to ask you all to answer some or all of the questions below so that I can gather some generalized information to use in this paper. Any answers given may be used in my paper along with your forum name. If you do not wish for your answers to be public, please message me privately so I can still use your data while keeping you anonymous.

You do not have to answer all of them if you don't want to, but the more the better.

Questions:

*Where do you live? NC, VA, CA etc.*

1. Who is your favorite NFL team? What made you become a fan? Were you ever a fan of another team?

2. What is your favorite thing about your favorite team?

3. Has there been a time you've gone against your team for morality reasons? Explain. (i.e. situations like Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Bounty Gate)

4. What would you like to change about your team (besides players/coaches/owners etc)?

5. What kind of fan are you? Hardcore/Diehard/Fair Weather/Bandwagon etc. What are the differences in these types of fans?

6. Who is your favorite football player? What makes him your favorite? How does this impact what team you root for?

7. Why do you think Americans are so interested in football?

8. Does your teams performance ever effect your personal life? If so, how?

----------------------------------

On the questions you choose to answer, please elaborate as much as you can.

Once the project is finished, I will post a link to it so you all can view the final result. Thank you all for the help.

*Where do you live? NC, VA, CA etc.* From Jacksonville Fl, currently stationed at Camp Lejeune NC

1. Who is your favorite NFL team? What made you become a fan? Were you ever a fan of another team? Jacksonville Jaguars, had to root for the home team. Jags got the team when I was 13 so I was hooked. Before that I was a Chargers fan.

2. What is your favorite thing about your favorite team? The fact my hometown has an NFL team. No matter how much crap my frieds talk about the Jags, they can't claim a hometown NFL team.

3. Has there been a time you've gone against your team for morality reasons? Explain. (i.e. situations like Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Bounty Gate). No. Haven't really had any moral objections for the Jaguars compared to other teams. Maybe JB due to drunk driving.(Have had a few frieds killed in DUI accidents)

4. What would you like to change about your team (besides players/coaches/owners etc)? Nothing now. Just get back to the winning culture we had in the beginning.

5. What kind of fan are you? Hardcore/Diehard/Fair Weather/Bandwagon etc. What are the differences in these types of fans? I'm a consistent fan, other than not watching games this season. I take everything with a grain of salt and will always root for my team, however I will not let it run my life.

6. Who is your favorite football player? What makes him your favorite? How does this impact what team you root for? Favorites were Mike Anderson and Ahmard Hall. Both were former Marines so I have much respect for guys that served, then made it to the NFL. As for Jaguars i'd say Blackmon due to his parents being Marines, or Allen Robinson just because I like his skill set.

7. Why do you think Americans are so interested in football? I think it has to do with it is an AMERICAN game. You don't see other countries playing football like you do Basketball, Baseball, or Hockey.

8. Does your teams performance ever effect your personal life? If so, how? I try not to let it, however 2 weeks ago I let the Titans game get to me so much I almost had a stroke, which resulted in an exile from watching games this season. I will continue to follow and support but can't subject my body to the stress.

(This post was last modified: 10-23-2014, 09:47 AM by Jaguar Warrior.)

Jacksonville, Florida

1. Jacksonville Jaguars. I became a Jaguars fan because I was born and had family in Jacksonville, despite not living there as a child (I lived in Atlanta). I didn't really become a football fan until my early teens, but when I did I automatically knew which team I was going to root for. Also, I loved the uniforms. Now I live and work in Jacksonville and couldn't imagine being a fan of another team. When I was real young I liked the Dolphins and Dan Marino, but was never really into football like I am now.

2. My favorite thing about the team is its from my city! Right now they don't really have an identity, but I loved watching Fred Taylor run the ball and the running game was always one of my favorite aspects of the Jaguars.

3. Nope.

4. The stigma and looming feeling that the team will be moving to London or LA.

5. I wouldn't say diehard or hardcore because I don't go to the games often or spend thousands of dollars on them, but I am emotional about this team and care about wins and losses.

6. Fred Taylor. Smooth, agile, and fun to watch. Always a thread to break the long one. Player's don't impact the team I root for.

7. Because large corporations spend millions of dollars in advertisements. Social stigma. Also, it is pretty fun to watch.

8. I can be pretty grumpy after a loss, but after sleeping on it, no.

Where I live: Hagerstown, MD (born and raised in Tallahassee, FL).

1. The Jaguars, of course.

I became a fan the instant I found out that Jax had been awarded a franchise. I haven't lived in Northern Florida in 27 years, but it is and always will be home to me so changing allegiance to my new, "home" team wasn't very hard. Prior to that, I was surprisingly a Rams' fan. The Rams of the 80s were a very good and grossly underrated team because they lived in the shadow of the 49ers. Jim Everett (before he became Chris), Eric Dickerson, Henry Ellard and Willie "Flipper" Anderson were, and still are, arguably the most underrated offense of the era and they were solid defensively. Much like the late 90s Utah Jazz (who I was also a fan of), they had the misfortune of running into a virtually unstoppable championship juggernaut.

2. Tough question. If I had to pick one thing it'd be the location. Northern Florida is amazing and not many people know that who aren't from there.

3. No. I see no point in doing so.

4. History. Imagine if we had made it past New England and won the Super Bowl in 1996? I think that, more than anything (even had we done so in 1999), would have truly put this franchise on the map.

5. Diehard. I will never abandon my team. I will never change allegiance again short of the team no longer existing. I'm not hardcore. I'm not a stat guy. I simply love my team for all its flaws and will continue doing so.

6. This is where it gets tricky. My favorite Jaguar is Aaron Beasley. My favorite player period is Eric Dickerson.

7. Because it's ours...and it's inherently a violent sport. We Americans love our violence. Smile

8. Nope. Outside of having to sometimes justify my allegiance to casual/bandwagon fans of trending teams, no. If anything, me being a Jaguars fan in the middle of Steelers, Ravens and Redskins countries has made me quite a few friends. The Steelers fans especially, for as obnoxious as they can be, are very respectful of my ties to the Jaguars and deep down most of them want to see us kicking [BAD WORD REMOVED] again...just not against them.

1. Who is your favorite NFL team? What made you become a fan? Were you ever a fan of another team?

A. Jacksonville Jaguars

B. When Mark Brunell tore up his knee, I prayed for him. God's answer was a miracle: he was only out 6 weeks and did not need surgery.

C. Packers, Broncos, Bengals, Steelers, new Browns, and 49ers. I still like the first two.

2. What is your favorite thing about your favorite team?

I know there have been a couple exceptions, but almost 100% of the time we emphasize good character when acquiring and retaining players.

3. Has there been a time you've gone against your team for morality reasons? Explain. (i.e. situations like Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Bounty Gate)

Why should I do that? Football is the ultimate team sport, so I don't believe in rooting for or against teams because of one player or coach.

4. What would you like to change about your team (besides players/coaches/owners etc)?

I wish they kept the font types that were used in 1997 and full-body jaguar on the sleeves.

5. What kind of fan are you? Hardcore/Diehard/Fair Weather/Bandwagon etc. What are the differences in these types of fans?

Diehard! A fair-weather or bandwagon fan is someone who only roots for good teams. True fans stay with their favorite teams.

6. Who is your favorite football player? What makes him your favorite? How does this impact what team you root for?

I don't have a favorite player now, but Mark Brunell used to be that guy.

7. Why do you think Americans are so interested in football?

It is a fun sport to watch because you never know what will happen next. The rule change to allow forward passes obviously helped.

8. Does your team's performance ever affect your personal life? If so, how?

Why would it? My personal life is affected by the schedule, not how good or bad the Jaguars are.

The first question should be three seperate questions. In case you don't know the difference between effect and affect, I corrected a spelling error.

1. Jaguars, have been since we got the team in 95 as a teenager. Finally have a family of my own and have tickets. Yes, the Steelers...my Dad was a Steeler fan (still is)

2. They are MY team. From my lil old town.

3. No, fortunately not much of that here. Lots of Wide outs doing drugs though...

4. I would like the helmets fixed, the two tone paint job is hideous. I'd also cut concession costs at the stadium.

5. Diehard, is there any Jaguar fans left who are not? I think fans with tickets are the diehards for the most part. Bandwaggoners showup when the team is succesful, and leave early...lol

6. Larry Czonka. Dude was an animal. Undefeated season, then retired to go hunt Alaska. My kinda guy!

7. It's our version of Futbol everywhere else on the planet.

8. Certainly. My whole family is up after a win, and down after a loss.

1. Who is your favorite NFL team? What made you become a fan? Were you ever a fan of another team?

 1. Jacksonville Jaguars

 2. Hometown team - have lived here since 1990

 3. Several over the years. Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos.

2. What is your favorite thing about your favorite team?

At this point in time, the youth.

3. Has there been a time you've gone against your team for morality reasons? Explain. (i.e. situations like Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Bounty Gate)

NO

4. What would you like to change about your team (besides players/coaches/owners etc)?

Perhaps a Super Bowl win.

5. What kind of fan are you? Hardcore/Diehard/Fair Weather/Bandwagon etc. What are the differences in these types of fans?

I would consider myself "Diehard"

 1. Hardcore - Only cares about this team, goes "over the top" in terms of "fandom".

 2. Diehard - Enjoys the team and is loyal during both the ups and downs.

 3. Fair Weather - Knows of the team, but doesn't really follow them, doesn't know all of the players, coaches, etc.

 4. Bandwagon - Is only a fan of the team if they are winning.

6. Who is your favorite football player? What makes him your favorite? How does this impact what team you root for?

There have been several over the years. Tony Dorsett, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, Dan Marino, Jimmy Smith, Fred Taylor just to name a few.

My favorite player is chosen just by the way that they play and how much I enjoy watching them.

Current favorite player is Blake Bortles.

7. Why do you think Americans are so interested in football?

It's become another "pastime" much like baseball is considered. I've always loved the game ever since I was a young child.

8. Does your teams performance ever effect your personal life? If so, how?

Not really. I view the NFL and my team as entertainment. Sure I'm happy after a victory and disappointed after a loss, but there are more important things in life besides a sport/team. Watching the games is my "release" from the day-to-day grind of real life.

JW, I'd like to point out that "seperate" is not a word.

"Irony" is.

And, as usual, awesome post.

1. Who is your favorite NFL team? What made you become a fan? Were you ever a fan of another team?

Jaguars. I became a fan the second my hometown was awarded a team. Prior to the Jaguars I was (and still am, but second to the Jags) a New Orleans Saints fan. I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Jacksonville.

2. What is your favorite thing about your favorite team? The fact that it is OUR team.

3. Has there been a time you've gone against your team for morality reasons? Explain. (i.e. situations like Greg Hardy, Ray Rice, Bounty Gate) No. As for "Bounty Gate" what a crock. That goes on at all levels of the sport.

4. What would you like to change about your team (besides players/coaches/owners etc)? The negative media perception

5. What kind of fan are you? Hardcore/Diehard/Fair Weather/Bandwagon etc. What are the differences in these types of fans? I'm a diehard fan. I think the poster above who listed the following described the types of fan perfectly.

My all time favorite is Tony Boselli. The guy was simply awesome. Currently probably have to say Drew Brees if I had to pick one.

7. Why do you think Americans are so interested in football? Its fast. Its violent and it is fun. What's not to like?

8. Does your teams performance ever effect your personal life? If so, how? Not usually. Have to admit I was pretty upset when we lost in the AFC Championship game to the Titans.
