Offensive "Progress"

#1

We are marginally better on offense compared with 2012 and 2013. Rushing yards/game, for example ( 85.6 in 2012, 78.8 in 2013 and 98.1 so far in 2014). We're still only 21st in the league in rushing yards/game. however. Scoring, however, at 15.8 pts./game, is last in the league. We were 22nd in 2013 and 30th in 2012.

We're currently last also in interceptions, sacks allowed and QB hits. We were near the bottom in those 3 categories in 2012 and 2013 also.

Nothing really stands out in the offensive stats to indicate "progress". Maybe I'm missing something.

Without digging into statistics, I am sure the JAGS have improved on converting 3rd down and keeping plays alive (somewhat).

We have a QB who isn't Blaine Gabbert or Chad Henne.

More than half of our starters on offense are 2nd year players and rookies. What did you expect, the 99 rams?

Yes, early season pounding on this board showed that a lot of posters thought that we were "one guy" away, that's why the pushed so hard for Bortles to play and why they've turned on everyone else (and HIM!) since then. They were simply wrong about the circumstances and can't admit it.

I can sum this up for you with a little diagram of our O-line and QB.

15 NFL gms (off of brkn ankle)/
Underperforming Vet/
Rookie  /
Rookie /
UDFA w/broken hand

ROOKIE

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think 21st in rushing behind that line is actually a good sign. Wait till the young guys get a little stronger and more seasoned/polished.  Could be a great rushing attack next year.

The offense is littered with rookies, and is missing its best player (Justin Blackmon). With that said, I'd still take the 2014 Jaguars offense over the 2013 unit any day of the week, try to have some perspective.

AND compare the change since those 5 guys all got on the field together. That wasn't even the group week 3 of the season.

I actually think the offense moves the ball pretty good between the 20's (light years better than any Gabbert-led offense we ever had)

The problem area's to me are:

-Getting started from inside our own 20 (we rarely drive over 80 yards)

-Redzone offense (not unusual for a young offense but we seem to have a penchant for turnovers here at the worst time)

-Chunk Plays (I wish I was smart enough to identify why but I'm not  :teehee: )

I have been a defender of Jedd Fisch but some of Lageman's comments are starting to color my view of him as of late...

"They"

Who exactly?

Starting Bortles was and is absolutely the right move. But I don't think anyone thought we were 1 player away.

I'm trying to be objective. We were sold a story that centered on " improvement ". We were encouraged to ignore wins and losses. Improvement.........game by game.........was what we were supposed to focus on. When that directive was stated, we knew the offense would be littered with rookies. We knew Blackmon was a long shot to ever play again. I'm not expecting miracles.........just overall progress. I realize there will be regressions, but the plan was that we'd be a much better team by game 16 than game 1, and I'm not seeing any trend in that direction. Point some out, I'll be glad to change my "perspective".

The Jaguars are 1 player away from being competitive. That one player just happens to be an elite QB, though. So help is not on the way, so to speak.

I can't recall anyone that thought starting Bortles was anything other than something that had to be done to keep the team from setting records of ineptness that would likely never be broken.

Do you mean that Bortles definitely doesn't have the potential to be an elite QB?

We've only scored over 20 twice this year, both times coming in the last 4 games.

No, I mean he's not Tom Brady just yet.

Gotcha. Had a feeling you hadn't  written him off just yet.

No one within the organization told you that there would improvement game by game. I think most (if not all) people who make their living in the NFL understand that rookie progress is not steady, not consistent, and probably quite often, doesn't even look like progress.

But yes, I think this team is going to look better in Week 16 than in Week 1. If you're looking for progress, why don't you try the stat lines on the games on a week-by-week basis since you can't see any trend of improvement in the run game, the pass game, or the defense. The team is definitely better now than they were Week 1. If they continue to improve, then they will be better in Week 16 than they are now. There's been no sign of a consistent and permanent lack of improvement.

“It just shows what kind of team we are. We’re a tough team. We like contact. We’re very physical. We want the issue to be brought to us so we can show people we can stand up to it and overcome it. Seeing that’s just a symbol of our team and who we are.” - Jaguars DT Malik Jackson
