Looked like he got lost trying to go through progressions if his first read wasn't getting open, and for a guy in his fourth season and playing for a coach whose system he was in at NE he doesn't seem as good as I'd hope he would if I were a texans fan.

Mallett went through his progressions like a pro. Not sure how you're gonna say that when he found his hot read every time.


As a Texan fan I'm cautious about Mallett because of the Keenum tease last season but the guy was a field general who commanded the offense better than Schaub in even his best games. If he can continue to play that way even against the Colts and Ravens then it's easy to see why fans would be believers.

I'm not crowning him just yet but he'll be able to spread the D like no other Texans QB has in the past. Or like any QB in the NFL for that matter.

Knowing your hot read on a blitz isn't going through progressions.

 

The way I recall the game was just as I said. If the first option didn't come open and he had to go somewhere else he seemed to get lost trying to go to his second or third read.

 

I would find that disturbing as a texans fan, considering this isn't a new scheme or system to him.

Yeah but the real question is can he bench press more weight than Stafford, Flacco,or Cutler? Everyone knows (thanks JW!) that's how you really determine arm strength.

Unlike Jags fans we're not comparing Mallet (ie. Bortles) to Payton Manning after the preseason or a 1-game NFL start. TackHammer is simply saying that his first game was very productive, but he's not counting him as a long-term starter until he backs it up for the rest of the 6-game season.

I said he could spread the "D" in other words he is capable of making throws down field and the D will have to honor that.

Texans have never had a QB that could do that with any accuracy.
