Tampa Bay is....

2 wins behind leading the division and 1 loss from the 1st pick in the NFL draft.

Think about that for a minute...

The NFC south division sucks this year. I just hope whoever wins the division has a loosing record so we can hear the bellyaching on why the playoff format should be changed.

I'm sure whichever team in the NFCE between the cowboys and eagles that loses the division will propose the same change that the Jaguars proposed about seven or eight years ago, and the NFL will once again reject it, because just slinking into the playoffs isn't enough reward for a team with a losing record winning a bad division, that team deserves to be rewarded for its losing season with a home playoff game.

I read that on twitter last night and thought how strange a scenario that was this late into the season, but when you look at their division record being 0-4 and how they'd likely have to win the division outright and not end in a tie with anyone it ends up not being as dramatic a scenario as it originally sounds.  With their division record they are more like 3 games out of first with 5 games to go.  Not impossible, but very very unlikely.  Like us, they'll be picking high in next year's draft.

On top of that, their remaining schedule is brutal: Bengals, at Lions, at Panthers, Packers, Saints. They would be lucky to win any of those games.

Schedules rotate.  The NFCS played the AFCN this year and the AFCN has dominated them.  Should the NFCS be penalized for having to play a very good AFCN division this year by losing a home playoff game?  Having the winner of a division host a playoff game equalizes schedule inequalities.  It's simple, you want a home playoff game?  Just win your division.  The same rationale you show above could create a scenario where a 10-6 wildcard team in a weak division (like the NFCE or AFCS where 2 teams are bottom feeders) ends up hosting a 9-7 division winner in a truly tougher division.

The AFCN is 10-1-1 against the NFCS this year so far which is why one division looks so good and one looks so bad.  Your non-conference opponents shouldn't be given any more control on how the playoffs shake out in your own conference aside from the value of just winning the games against them.

In other words the fact that all four AFCN teams have winning records this year is misleading because of their weak schedule. But is it misleading that all four NFCS teams have losing records?

The NFCS plays against the NFCN this season. That division has two winning and two losing teams. So all four NFCS teams have two easy games if you only use records to judge how good or bad teams are. The  NFCS should therefore be judged against the Bears and Vikings. Add the Giants for one team and Redskins and Rams for another, and it really is not as hard as you think.

Great time to be a Bucs fan, still in the playoff race heading into December :woot: .

Imagine Tampa wins their division so they pick at minimum in the upper 20s in the draft. Then we hose them to move up to our top 3 pick in a Herschel Walker-esque trade.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS

I wouldn't say that it's misleading. The AFCN is just better than what most people think.

One reason the NFCS looks bad is because most of their losses are at the hands of the AFCN (total domination).

If you want to think the AFCN is misleading because of a weak schedule,, then you have to think the Colts are very misleading because of a super weak AFCS schedule.

The Colts are 7-4 (4-0 in the division). That means they have a losing record (3-4) outside of the AFCS. The Colts get 5-6 cupcake games each year from this terrible division. Say they go 6-0 or 5-1 inside the division. That means they only have to go 5-5 or even 4-6 outside of the AFCS to post a good record and get in the playoffs. It sickens me.

So,, since the Colts have a losing record outside of the AFCS opponents,, are they a misleading team?

Whoever wins that division could lower their draft position by about 10 spots. The other 3 teams will be picking probably around the top 10 or so.

The other divisions the AFCS got last year were the NFCW and AFCW - the best division in each conference. The Colts beat both Super Bowl teams and the NFC Championship Game loser. So I think 11-5 wasn't misleading at all. But this year they have the weakest schedule based on the 2013 records of all 16 opponents (AFCS teams count twice).

Of course, if you want to base strength of schedule on 2014 opponent records, the weakest one obviously belongs to an AFCN team. However, if the NFCS teams are only being dominated by the AFCN teams no one can deny it is simply a case of one division being better than the other . . . except the Panthers and Bengals.

If you hate the Colts winning the division because of their schedule, root for the Texans. Oh wait, their schedule is weak too.

The top of the draft will definitely include the Jaguars, Titans, Raiders, Jets, and Buccaneers.
