Quote:Then we wonder WHY teenage girls want cosmetic surgery, and why teenage boys take steroids.I've never once mentioned winning. None. Never. Steroids has become prominent because there is money to be made. Take Cushing for example. He juiced up made millions. He is now out again, most likely because of what the juice did on his body. But he made a nice chunk of change in a brief amount of time.

Which is a lesson in itself, but it should not be the only lesson. So you advocate not working hard then, because maybe, just maybe you won't get what you were working toward?

Quote:No doubt it will be. I think we are going to go to NC this year to see the Polar Express, and hopefully snow. We went to Boone and Blowing Rock. It's a great area. However your missing the point teaching kids how to lose and accept defeat is just as important teaching them to win. It's not about beating anyone's chest or being a drill Sargent it's about helping young boys understand the need for hard work to achieve success it's not guaranteed to them.
As a kid when my team sucked and we got a trophy I always wondered why. My parents didn't teach me to be ultra competitive but I always have been. I never displayed those trophies. Just the winning ones I got. I was embarrassed by the participation trophy. I looked at it as a losers trophy. Every one got one so what made it special? It wasn't earned, or at least not in my eyes. So, just from my experiences I don't mind just the winning teams getting trophies. But as I am typing this, I'm thinking back that I just wanted to play and play to the best of my abilities and win. I probably couldn't have cared less if we won and didn't give us a trophy either. It was just for the love of the game I guess.
Maybe adults are overthinking it and making it a bigger deal than it is. Quote:I've never once mentioned winning. None. Never. Cushing is the one we pay millions to watch, so we learn there is a prize for steroids. ![]() If there is a plateau of grandeur that is held up as the brass ring of working hard, it will as well reward those without a chance of obtaining the trophy with a "failure" trophy. Here, you weren't good enough, Billy ... Go home and look prettier next year ... Have your Dad explain it to you, he knows everything about working harder to be prettier. People are born with limitations, and if you offer any teenage girl a pretty pill, don't be surprised if she takes it. No one wants to finish last when so much praise comes to those that finish first. I know the concept is well intended, but don't let well intended cloud the actual results. Kids are very dramatically sensitive, and what an adult may believe is supportive of hard work, can as well become proof of failure. Quote:Im hardly a jock most people that know would find that amusing. However your missing the point teaching kids how to lose and accept defeat is just as important teaching them to win. Okay, so you are not a "Drill Sergeant" ... Teach your kid that hard work by painting the house, pulling weeds, cleaning the gutters, and washing the car pays off with a nice little allowance. ... OR, you could hand them a ball, and tell them to work hard at smashing the smallest kid on the other team will reward them with not only a big shiny trophy, but also a nice little allowance ... And when they lose? It becomes a new lesson of why they need to work harder? When did sports become the epitome of teaching hard work? There is a reason the very small mangaloid is still alive while the dinobones are displayed in the museum. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! I have heard that the area has really grown in the last 10 years. There wasn't a whole lot there when I went.

No one's saying or implying that sports is the ONLY form of teaching life lessons, I AM pointing out that many of the kids that are in sports have no one at home to teach them these lessons. For those kids sports might be one of the FEW areas they CAN learn these lessons.
Quote:Do I need an appointment? Never Quote:So you advocate not working hard then, because maybe, just maybe you won't get what you were working toward? Sammy answered for me: Quote:If there is a plateau of grandeur that is held up as the brass ring of working hard, it will as well reward those without a chance of obtaining the trophy with a "failure" trophy. Here, you weren't good enough, Billy ... Go home and look prettier next year ... Have your Dad explain it to you, he knows everything about working harder to be prettier. I think kids need realistic expectations to go with their hard work. That's why I'm a fan of the "hardest worker" trophies, even though they don't reward the ultimate achievement. These are few and far between at the professional level. I have also found out the hard way that hard work and brains will only get you so far. Then there's things like genetics and dynasty - a cynical lesson for grownups. Let children be children, dammit. Adulthood comes fast enough, and some lessons can wait. Meh, I was never motivated by trophies regardless of the exclusivity of them. I was motivated because I didn't want to be the kid that let the team down. Worked pretty well for me.

Except for that time you missed that tackle against Sammy's team in our nudist colony league. You sure let us down that game. We show less advertisements to registered users. Edit: to answer your question it was also free mojito (sp) night. You definitely got your money's worth. You won't be able to make your Daughter feel pretty when she finishes last in the beauty pageant. "Buck up there soldier, you will just have to out work the competition" |
