If the Jags have a franchise QB grade on him, I hope they take him and let the two battle it out. We need a franchise QB much more than anything else, something we've arguably never had. Do whatever it takes to get "the guy", then recoup whatever value you can. Our track record in Round 1 is God awful anyway, I'm willing to take the shot. Of course all this is caveated based on their feeling on the two. Hopefully Bortles is the guy and hopefully they're right. I just can't stomach missing out the opportunity to draft a franchise guy if we don't already have one

But the deeper point being (unless they are bowled over with a trade offer) they are better off taking the QB here. You keep taking one until it becomes almost 100% apparent that you don't have any QB issues/ questions. 

 

I like Bortles, and still think that potential is there but am I 100% sold? Or even 75% sold? No I am not. Part of that is that I think Bortles has been harmed by a bad OC. I'd say that I'm 60/ 40 on Bortles right now, and 60% is not enough to keep me from drafting what could be a better QB. 

 

Whats the worst that could happen? That one of them is a backup for us? Look at what Henne makes already, salary-wise. The new rookie pay scale makes it less of an issue regarding salary. 

 

Yeah, I'm in favor of taking a QB like Mariota at our pick if we can't make any trades getting en masse of picks in return.

Actually the worst that could happen is neither ends up a franchise QB and Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory and Amari Cooper end up as perennial Pro Bowlers.

I think for a QB, specifically mariota, there will be trade opportunities if he is there when we pick. That's best case scenario.


I think if there aren't, this might be one of those situations where you draft him and then hold him hostage, try to move him or bortles when a team realizes the draft didn't play out how they wanted.

I agree. I don't think it's at all bad to have two potential franchise QB's battle it out for the starting job. There's trade value in the guy who loses out, as evidenced by the Rob Johnson trade to Buffalo, which got us the 9th pick in the 1998 draft. Does the name Fred Taylor ring a bell?

I am not opposed to the Jags drafting Mariota, despite having Bortles here already. 

 

Ideally, I'd rather deal the pick for a windfall of draft choices (if possible), but if thats not able to be executed, I'd be fine with the Jags drafting Mariota. Adam2012 said in another thread that he don't want to hear about the years that we passed on Roethlisberger or Rodgers because we already had Leftwich, but well - thats the point and thats the lesson they need to learn from that. If you don't learn from history, you are doomed to repeat it and I guess thats what he wants.
