No the "worst" that could happen is we don't end up with a franchise QB, due to banking on the incumbent being one before we are 100% sure he is. 

 

I agree. I don't think it's at all bad to have two potential franchise QB's battle it out for the starting job. There's trade value in the guy who loses out, as evidenced by the Rob Johnson trade to Buffalo, which got us the 9th pick in the 1998 draft. Does the name Fred Taylor ring a bell?

 

Agreed. The "loser" of the QB competition in such a scenario of drafting Mariota isn't going to be without trade value (if it comes to that). 

 

Take a guy with the third pick to flip him for the ninth pick. Good idea.

My point was - I'm so tired of hearing that used any time a QB is projected to be at the top of the draft - i.e., every year.

 

You telling me you know Mariota is going to have the career of Roethlisberger? And you know Caldwell is not taking a QB - it doesn't work that way, and there is a reason for that. This team is not one back-up QB away.

I realize I'll take a lot of flak for this, but hear me out. If Bortles and Mariota were both coming out at the same time, which would we have picked? I believe it would be Mariota. So if given the first pick in the next draft, why not grab the better option to lead this team for the next 15 years? I realize it means going through another season with a rookie QB, but if you take the long-range view, would we be better off?

Alternatively, there will be several teams willing to give multiple draft picks for the chance to draft this guy.

While it may be a long shot they take Mariota, to say they aren't taking any QB is probably not a good bet.  I hope they grab one in the latter rounds.  Any chance at development in a back up is better than Henne.  He is what he is.

We don't need receivers. Blackmon is likely returning in 2015 and the 3 we added this year are more than enough. And thats not even counting Cecil (who may be allowed to walk in the offseason).

That would be a Jags move...take another QB with so many other holes and be 2-14 again next year.   I'm pretty sure Jacksonville is the last place he wants to play given the QB situation and market.  There will be heavy politicking by his agent and others to get him to the Jets ala Eli Manning.

Do you really believe our receivers are good?  How often have you seen them get open?  Most of the time our QB had to pass with defenders standing next to them.

Not RG3 style, but swapping firsts this year and taking a teams first next year, like the Cle/Buf trade for Watkins would be awesome.

Don't be misled by Bortles. Y'all think he's going to take you to the Super Bowl and beyond, but I have my doubts after Blake Blew-it has consistently regressed from day 1.  I ain't drinking his Koolaid until it ferments...  Take Mariotta because he threw 6 INT's in 2012, 4 INT's in 2013 and 2 INT's in 2014 in a real conference..... that's growth and that's about to be one fine wine baby. Don't pass it up for a solo cup in hand of cooking sherry.
