Is Taking Mariota Really Off The Table?
|
QB isn't a glaring hole on this team right now, no matter how bad he played this year. Priorities..
There will be other Heisman Trophy winning QB's after Mariota, if one is still needed in the next year or two. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Actually the worst that could happen is neither ends up a franchise QB and Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory and Amari Cooper end up as perennial Pro Bowlers. No the "worst" that could happen is we don't end up with a franchise QB, due to banking on the incumbent being one before we are 100% sure he is. Quote:I agree. I don't think it's at all bad to have two potential franchise QB's battle it out for the starting job. There's trade value in the guy who loses out, as evidenced by the Rob Johnson trade to Buffalo, which got us the 9th pick in the 1998 draft. Does the name Fred Taylor ring a bell? Agreed. The "loser" of the QB competition in such a scenario of drafting Mariota isn't going to be without trade value (if it comes to that). Quote:Take a guy with the third pick to flip him for the ninth pick. Good idea. Ending up without a franchise QB is a worse idea. Quote:My point was - I'm so tired of hearing that used any time a QB is projected to be at the top of the draft - i.e., every year. No, I'm not telling you Mariota is going to have the career of Ben - I'm telling you that we don't have our QB position settled yet. Until you are sure you have a franchise QB, you keep trying to attain that. Quote:I realize I'll take a lot of flak for this, but hear me out. If Bortles and Mariota were both coming out at the same time, which would we have picked? I believe it would be Mariota. So if given the first pick in the next draft, why not grab the better option to lead this team for the next 15 years? I realize it means going through another season with a rookie QB, but if you take the long-range view, would we be better off?Why don't we take a QB every year for the next 10 years. That way we may get lucky and find one that can succeed without receivers that can get open and a line that can't block.
To play for the Jags right now, you need to be durable with all this inexperience. Only Bortles could survive this beating.
Quote:I have no doubt there will be dozens of more threads just like this one up until the draft. The team isn't taking Mariota or any other QB.While it may be a long shot they take Mariota, to say they aren't taking any QB is probably not a good bet. I hope they grab one in the latter rounds. Any chance at development in a back up is better than Henne. He is what he is. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

We don't need receivers. Blackmon is likely returning in 2015 and the 3 we added this year are more than enough. And thats not even counting Cecil (who may be allowed to walk in the offseason). The above is a cop out.
Quote: Last team to take QB's in the top 5 in consecutive years?

Quote:Last team to take QB's in the top 5 in consecutive years? What does that matter? --We're-- in our situation. How many of those teams that failed to take another QB (when they thought they had one) wished they could re-do their past mistake of passing on QB opportunties? --I know one team - Jacksonville, in 2004 & 2005.
That would be a Jags move...take another QB with so many other holes and be 2-14 again next year. I'm pretty sure Jacksonville is the last place he wants to play given the QB situation and market. There will be heavy politicking by his agent and others to get him to the Jets ala Eli Manning.

And thats not even counting Cecil (who may be allowed to walk in the offseason).Do you really believe our receivers are good? How often have you seen them get open? Most of the time our QB had to pass with defenders standing next to them.
Quote:What does that matter? --We're-- in our situation. It matters because teams don't do what you are suggesting.

Andrew Luck was sacked 40 times his rookie year. He took a few in the playoff game that year. Quote:There will be other Heisman Trophy winning QB's after Mariota, if one is still needed in the next year or two.Just pluck em right off the Heisman tree, easy as pie. Quote:It matters because teams don't do what you are suggesting. You're right, and i'm sure none of them would want Aaron Rodgers playing for them now either.
Quote:Not RG3 style, but swapping firsts this year and taking a teams first next year, like the Cle/Buf trade for Watkins would be awesome. Knowing our luck, that team will pick Mariota and win a Super Bowl the next season. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:"Long range view".. I find this phrase funny because that's exactly what we've been told to do currently and everyone is soiling them selves. Let's say we pick Mariotta and understand we have to have patience with a rookie QB. Oh wait a second....... That one hit the nail on the head. Quote:Dont be fooled by Mariotta as an NFL prospect. Don't be misled by Bortles. Y'all think he's going to take you to the Super Bowl and beyond, but I have my doubts after Blake Blew-it has consistently regressed from day 1. I ain't drinking his Koolaid until it ferments... Take Mariotta because he threw 6 INT's in 2012, 4 INT's in 2013 and 2 INT's in 2014 in a real conference..... that's growth and that's about to be one fine wine baby. Don't pass it up for a solo cup in hand of cooking sherry.
I ain't no monkey... I'm an ape.

I'll say this much, I'm looking forward to an offseason of arguing about both what we should do, and what Caldwell actually does.
Ah I can almost smell the offseason, that time where it's not so bad being a Jaguars fan. |
