Is Taking Mariota Really Off The Table?

I'll be honest. Depending on what the team does in FA, I would have no problem with picking another QB. As a GM, normally they are tied to their ability to pick the right QB. Crazy and usually unpredictable stuff happens to every NFL team, every year. Say Bortles gets hurt, and Mariota comes in and gives this team a decade of winning (I admittedly don't care enough about college football to make a prediction on Mariota's future success or failure), would it be worth it?
At this point, if I'm Caldwell, I at least have to entertain the possibility that I was wrong with the hiring of Gus Bradley. What's the best way of ensuring I keep my job if Gus loses his? Picking the right QB to lead a team to 10 plus years of winning. What better way of increasing your odds to do that than by selecting a top 3 QB two years in a row? I realize here are flaws to the logic of picking a top 3 QB two years straight, but I would almost welcome the decision, provided we spend plenty and wisely in the upcoming FA period. Maybe they both work out and we get a great trade offer for one of them? Who knows. Quote:I realize I'll take a lot of flak for this, but hear me out. If Bortles and Mariota were both coming out at the same time, which would we have picked? I believe it would be Mariota. So if given the first pick in the next draft, why not grab the better option to lead this team for the next 15 years? I realize it means going through another season with a rookie QB, but if you take the long-range view, would we be better off?I wouldn't be upset if they grabbed another QB...Having two good QBs is a good problem to have...I don't think at this point in time anything has been ruled in or out
At this point, I'll be happy if Caldwell makes a decision he is sure of and is able to live with. If he comes across as confused or beaten like Gene Smith did when he drafted Alualu (obviously fell in love and couldn't trade back) at 10 or Bryan freaking Anger (I sincerely hope they replace him btw, dude can't coffin corner a punt to save his life), then I will be happy.
Everything is a crap shoot. Everything. If Caldwell takes Mariota and he's confident about it and it works, I'll love the guy. If it blows up, at least I can respect him for trying. Gene Smith forced everything. Just make a plan, stick to it, and live or die by it.
This is such a stupid idea. When Mariota struggles, we should start maameuverimg ourselves in a position for Christian Hackenberg? I'm not sure it matters at this point because Bortles can get it done In this league. I can't believe we went from "this organization is dumb for sitting Bortles" to "draft Mariota... What a joke.

Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."
I can see the sense in picking up someone new in the offseason, because Henne isn't the long term backup for us. But I'd be very surprised if we use that valuable first round pick on a QB after the high profile acquisition of Bortles.
There are so many teams desperate for a change of direction at QB and so few players with real quality this year, I'd be amazed if Mariota doesn't go early, but just can't see us picking him. It would be an embarrassing admission from the front office that their selection of Bortles wasn't going as planned and they would never want to do that. And besides, he was always billed as a player to be developed for 2015, so why abandon that plan halfway through ? (They would argue) Maybe someone like Prescott or Petty in the later rounds ? (If they fall far enough)
I just cant see us picking him in the first(or at all) I would love to trade back and grab some picks. I do hope Blake becomes a star and would love to grab other key players to place around him but that is me.
I do know how bad it feels looking back and seeing we missed Big Ben and Rodgers but I just cant see us taking QB's back to back years in the top 5. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
The Jags have holes needing filled all over the roster. But, just to play along:
I can remember a few instances where having 2 franchise caliber QBs worked out very well for other teams. Favre/Rodgers Brees/Rivers Montana/Young Vick/Schaub Warner/Green Kosar/Testaverde Probably alot more I cant think of. Some of those teams starters went down with injury,, the next guy came in and performed great (Jags don't have that potential in a backup). Some of those teams got trade compensation for a QB (another thing the Jags don't have). Point being,, it can't hurt to have a couple "top" guys at QB. What if the Jags are having a really good season in the future and BB goes down? I know, some of those guys were legends, some were solid. But, before these guys became the legends we knew,, they were solid QBs with an unknown factor. Anyway,, the Jags really need to spend their high picks on other positions. But,, having a couple good QB prospects on the roster won't hurt.
Quote:Rob Johnson was a fourth round pick in 1995. The Jags received the 9th pick in the 1998 draft when they traded him to Buffalo. Good deal, no?Not for Buffalo... Quote:That would be a Jags move...take another QB with so many other holes and be 2-14 again next year. I'm pretty sure Jacksonville is the last place he wants to play given the QB situation and market. There will be heavy politicking by his agent and others to get him to the Jets ala Eli Manning.I wouldn't be surprised at all if he lands with Oakland. The Raiders will probably pick first, and it's no guarantee that a new GM would be sold on Carr. Quote:I wouldn't be upset if they grabbed another QB...Having two good QBs is a good problem to have...I don't think at this point in time anything has been ruled in or outI see your point, but would counter with the old adage that if you have two QBs, you really have none. Quote:bryan anger - one of the key reasons the jaguars are a laughing stock to the general public. The third-round punter is just one minor piece of the puzzle. The real problems are the consistent lack of success in free agency and the draft. GM after GM have demonstrated no ability to build a successful team. Quote:I can remember a few instances where having 2 franchise caliber QBs worked out very well for other teams. Thanks for making me lol at the notion that Vinny Testaverde was a franchise QB.
Quote:Bortles is going to be the better NFL QB all day. Book it. Oh God. You telling someone on a message board to book it is like listening to a fortune teller that's homeless. Book it is the most asinine phrase a message boarder can post its almost funny. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Let's just hope Bortles continues to show improvement and makes this a moot point. I'm not sold on him, but thankfully it's not my choice to make. I've also barely watched Mariota so i'd be relying on our talent evaluators, which i can easily admit, i certaintly am not. I feel like Bortles is showing some slow growth and may just need a solid offseason.
I cannot believe this is even being discussed
We have just gone through the growing pains of one rookie qb lets not use our first rounder on helping him out lets use it on another qb and go through it again There is always going to be a better player on that green grass over the fense The,odds of having the best QB in the NFL is one in 32 but Russel Wilsons and Eli mannings still win the superbowl Add to that Mariota might be the best of the lot but if rg3 and Manziel taught me anything its that running qbs have a harder time adjusting to the NFL please don't lets not have this all preseason I don't want us to draft Cooper after spending two second rounders this year but the guys who thought that up.are a paragon of sense compared to this idiocy
It will take a lot of time in the offseason to work with Bortles on his mechanics/ playbook/ chemistry with recievers/ etc.
Having two QB going through this process would ensure that neither would get very far. Not a good idea. Quote:I cannot believe this is even being discussed Well said. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I cannot believe this is even being discussed I think for the most part, people realize how terrible an idea this really is.
Quote:Do you really believe our receivers are good? How often have you seen them get open? Most of the time our QB had to pass with defenders standing next to them. Yes I do think they are good. I see lesser WR's get open every week in the NFL. Our route trees/ scheme sucks.
Quote:The Jags have holes needing filled all over the roster. But, just to play along: We're in agreement. |
