Questions about Heisman Trophy winners

#1

Why is it that the best quarterback in college football is not the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy? Why aren't Heisman Trophy winners usually picked first overall?

Who the best Quarterback in college football is subjective.

Being considered the best player in College Football doesn't necessarily mean you have the potential to have the greatest impact on the NFL level.    Very few people thought Gino Torretta and Ty Detmer would go on to have a major impact at the NFL level.

One other factor to consider.     Non skill players on Offense rarely win the Heisman Trophy.     The fact that Ndamukong Suh didn't win the Heisman Trophy in 2009 speaks volumes of the chances of a non Offensive skill player winning the award.

It never made any sense to me that no defense-only player (Charles Woodson was much more than a cornerback) won the Heisman. That is ridiculous. But I am glad Suh did not win it because he went on to become the NFL's dirtiest player.

"Best quarterback" may be subjective, but I don't see many posters who would rather have Mariota than Bridgewater.

Your opinion of Ndamukong Suh is different than my opinion.    The term' witch hunt' comes to mind regarding the scrutiny the NFL league office is putting on Suh.     The bottom line is in the last two seasons,  only two personal fouls have been called on Suh.

There's about 5 different QB's that people around the country believe is the best COLLEGE football QB.      That won't be the case when it comes to the evaluation process leading up to the NFL Draft.

One of those personal fouls cost him more than some houses.

Perhaps one reason people can't agree on who the best quarterback is this year is fanhood. You would never expect TAMU fans to think Bridgewater is better than Manziel.

The amount of the Ndamukong Suh fine on the illegal block of Vikings C John Sullivan in the season opener was far greater than it should have been.      The reality of that play is Suh used poor judgment.     It cost the Lions/  OLB DeAndre Levy a TD.    Things happen quickly in games.    I'm convinced it wasn't a malicious act by Suh against Sullivan.    To Suh's credit,  when Levy picked off a pass in the game at Arizona the following week,   he didn't make the same mistake and Levy ended up scoring a TD that counted.

It's natural for fans of teams to believe their QB is the best in the country,   if that QB is helping the team win games consistently.    Yet,  when it comes to the NFL evaluation process of the QB's by the various NFL teams,   that same natural bias won't exist.

I would take Suh on my defense any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Because they often turn out to be a total bust in the NFL. It's called Tebowphobia

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

No, there have been others.  It's because of the cult-like obsession of his fans. You know who I'm talking about.....

1) It is slowly becoming the Best Dual Threat QB award.

2) Your team's success factors in a lot.

So Teddy Bridgewater is not mentioned as a Heisman candidate because he is primarily a pocket passer?

Player A:

271 attempts

1,658 yards rushing

334 yards receiving

20 total TDs (17 rush, 3 rec)

Team slated to play in the National Championship game.

Player B:

307 attempts

1,923 yards rushing

306 yards receiving

39 total TDs (33 rush, 6 rec)

Team slated to play in the Rose Bowl.

I lost respect for Heisman voters when Player A wins the award for Best Player in College Football and Player B doesn't even finish in the top 3 in voting.

Winning the heisman doesn't automatically mean you're a good pro prospect, in fact most heisman winning QBs go on to the NFL to be undwerwhelming or just flat out bad.

And winning the heisman usually factors in flashy/exciting style of play and team success. Even if Louisville went undefeated I would doubt if Bridgewater would win it because as good as he is as a pro prospect his play as a QB isn't exciting enough for voters. The last pocket passer to win the heisman was Sam Bradford and he had to throw 50 TDs to do it.

And the fact that many of the voters in the Midwest intentionally left Tebow off their ballots all together in order to get Bradford that heismen...

The Heisman Is for the best college player, who often puts up the best performance in college.  It is voted on by a relatively small amount of media professionals, who have a staggeringly larger stake in the outcome than John Q Public or former winners.

Wikipedia page here

The voters aren't supposed to take into account how well a certain player's skills will translate to the NFL, which is what talent scouts do.  What succeeds in college does not necessarily work in the NFL, which is why Tebow deserved a Heisman for his performance but not a job on an NFL team.

And yes, its outcome can be polluted by regional preferences, conference alliances, and personal prejudices.

Forgot to directly answer your question.

He is actually on the Heisman radar now.  He will likely be passed over for a leader on a team that is in contention for the national championship or that plays in a conference more prestigious than the AAC, which Louisville plays in.  As excellent as he is, he may not be able to overcome a loss to UCF in the minds of the voters.  Louisville's strength of schedule also works against him.

This year it really looks like QB is the only position contending, but that's not always the case.

Teddy doesn't have a chance. It's between Winston and Mariota right now.
