Blasphemy: If they're available, should the Jags draft Mariota or Winston?
|
Conventional wisdom says you draft your franchise QB, and stick with him for at least two years while you wait for him to develop. But this franchise has been foundering for six years. We all hope and pray that Bortles develops into a top tier QB, but what if he doesn't? Does the franchise draft another QB, and stink while they wait another two years to prove himself?
Mariota and Winston both have their problems (Winston's being more off the field than on it), but they also have tremendous upsides. If Bortles doesn't develop the way you'd hoped, you've got one of them waiting in the wings. You don't have to wait until the next draft to get a QB. And if Bortles does take off, you can trade Mariota/Winston for a first round draft pick. I know a lot of people want us to draft a great DE. But we can always get a great DE in the second round or in FA. How many great QBs are out there? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Mariota is a better player/prospect than Bortles. If they lose out and have the 1 overall, they really should consider taking him. The "let's see if Bortles develops" is the same thinking that had the Jags take Anger over Wilson, and Williams over roethlisberger (albeit Leftwich was better than Bortles/Gabbert in year one).
You cannot be a good GM and not consider taking Mariota despite taking a QB before.. I'm sure some team would offer you a 2nd or a conditional high round pick to trade for Bortles. They took a risk with Bortles at pick 3, they can't be afraid to take a risk and draft a QB twice.
This subject keeps coming up. Someone please tell me an instance in which a GM has ever selected a QB in the top 5 two years in a row, because I can't think of one.
It ain't going to happen. Why should it? Is this team one back up quarterback away from a title? LOL. If Mariota some how beats out Bortles (not likely) you have a top 5 pick sitting on the bench not developing. If Mariota gets beaten out by Bortles (much more likely) you have a top 5 pick sitting on the bench (or practice squad) not developing, and you've "wasted" the pick. And no, he wouldn't have much trade value. So, why use a top 5 pick to get a third round pick (or whatever) in trade? Makes no sense.

You don't know who is "great" - if everyone thought he was great he wouldn't be available in the 2nd round; if a DE is great he's not going to be available in FA. 3) "if Bortles doesn't develop the way you'd hoped you've got one of them waiting in the wings." What if he doesn't develop as you hoped? Draft a QB in the top 5 for the third year in a row? 4) this fails on a lot of levels

If you feel that Mariota is a Andrew Luck level sure thing then I think you do it. Otherwise, I would trade down for what you can get. Any extra picks are good.
Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster The Home Hypnotist! Media on the Brain Link! Quote:Peyton must store oxygen in that forehead of his. It's an old way of thinking, and teams do it, just to it! It won't happen. I am 100% sure the Jags are committed to Bortles and maybe that's the right thing to do, but you will have let the better player pass you buy, as a GM you have to be comfortable with that. It would be an extreme thing to do, and the Jags could not keep Borltes. Case in point. in 1998 the Chargers took the biggest QB bust in history. on 1999 they passed on Daunte Culpepper who before a knee injury was an elite QB for several years and almost went to multipl super bowls. This is an extreme case but why keep doing what every team does after drafting a bust? You can also use those two drafts to argue the other way as the colts took James, however it's a myth that Manning had a bad rookie season, anyone who tells you otherwise doesnt know football or their nfl history.
It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Jags to select another QB in next years draft. Simply for the benefit of having security and another plan if Bortles doesn't pan out. I seriously doubt that we take Mariotta in the 1st round (unless we trade a pick), but even than, there are far more concerning issues that we have with the O-Line, LB, FS, and we need a good run stopper on D.
Without a doubt, 2015 is going to be the year that this team MUST break out and win some games. There's no more excuses for this team to be 2-12, 3-11, or 4-10 a year from now. Of all the GMs in the history of the NFL (and I assume you would agree that at least a few know as much about the NFL as you) none of them thought this is a good idea the Jaguars should do it anyway? Got ya. None have done it because it's a dumb idea.

Unless he is head and shoulders better than Blake then you would have no reason to do this. Talk about taking the confidence out of Bortles by having your team draft another QB. If Caldwell does believe the new draftee is better then he better have a trade partner for bortles in the same draft. This team has too many holes and a trade down scenario is best if we do pick #1.

I think you have the right mindset here. I would not have drafted Bortles, so for me it's a little easier to pass on him in this draft, and it would take a lot of homework on Mariota, I don't care about him as a runner, I want him in the pocket, driving the ball. Unfortunately every video of Mariota is of him running into an empty midfield with some annoying song playing with it, which is nice on the college level, but in the NFL he needs to throw. Caldwell is a conservative guy, so he is sticking with Bortles, even if he throws 8 pick sixes in the next two weeks, gets a DUI and beats a kitten. We show less advertisements to registered users. No you trade the spot to build the rest of the team 10 out of 10 times. you have your QB you need other positions and can gain multiple picks with the availability of Mariota or Winston

Quote:I would love the haul of potential picks the Jags could acquire Mariota isn't Luck. And,honestly, I know I'm in the minority on this, but I would love if all the AFC south teams had franchise QBs. Wouldmake us a lot more fun to,watch.

Quote:Mariota is a better player/prospect than Bortles. If they lose out and have the 1 overall, they really should consider taking him. Better prospect? That's certainly arguable. Better player? Time will tell, but I think Bortles will be the better player in the end. How good of a prospect he is is irrelevant anyway, because Ryan Leaf was a fantastic prospect, and he ended up being complete and total garbage. Same goes with MANY MANY prospects. Mariota isn't an all world prospect either. This isn't Andrew Luck we're talking about. Dumb statement. No, that's not why we passed on Russel Wilson for a punter. Wilson was a third round pick, and one that the Jags would never have intended taking. He's only on your radar in hindsight, and ANYBODY could be a great GM with hindsight. Aside from the interceptions, I'd say Bortles has done better given what he has to work with. Leftwich had Fred Taylor, Kyle Brady, Jimmy Smith. Fred played all 16 games in Leftwich's first year, and managed to rush for 1500 yards. If we had Fred Taylor, Kyle Brady, and Jimmy Smith.. Not to mention Tony Brackens, and a young Brad Meester. (But certainly not rookie) Yet, only three times in history has a team picked QB's in the Top 5 two years in a row. If it took this to be a good GM, more GM's would do it. The whole "They don't have the stones to do it" argument doesn't work, because finding a QB is more important now than ever. And one of those times doesn't count, because the Redskins never signed the player because he chose to play in the AFL. You're ALWAYS taking a risk with players. You're taking a freaking Risk by taking Mariota too. And if you draft Mariota, trade Bortles, and Bortles goes on to have a successful career while Mariota flops, then Dave Caldwell would replace Gene Smith as the poster boy for the fan's ire. Writing off Bortles at this point is dumb anyway, and only armchair GM's are doing it.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.
If Texans are willing to get us 3 Firsts for Bortles I'd consider it, that's the only scenario I would though.
