How Might the Top 6 Picks Fall Out?

#1

Let's assume that the Jags can pull out another victory against a QB-less Texans team next week, then the Jags should be selecting 6th in the upcoming 2015 College Draft. Under such a scenario, how do you think the first 6 picks fall out?

Here is my projection:

1. Tampa Bay Bucs - Marcus Mariota - QB - Oregon

It has been speculated that the Bucs will take Mariota over Winston with the first pick, although I am not quite sure why?

2. Tennessee Titans - Leonard Williams - DE - USC

The Titans may believe that they already have their QB in Mettenberger and they may also believe that the Jets will want to move up and take the No. 2 pick out of their hands, but with the way the trade up scenario has worked for them in the past with Sanchez and with the way it worked for the Redskins with RG3, the trade up scenario is just too risky. In the end, I believe the Titans will take the best player on the draft board to rebuild their defensive line.

3. Oakland Raiders - Amari Cooper - WR - Alabama

With Leonard Williams off the board, the Raiders may opt for a prime target for their QB.

4. Washington Redskins - Shane Ray - DE/OLB - Missouri

Everyone has the Redskins reaching for an OT at this spot, but I think they will opt to replace Brian Orakpo who leaves in Free Agency. The Redskins should be able to take a quality OLT at the top of Rd 2.

5. New York Jets - Jameis Winston - QB - FSU

Good things happen to those that wait. Once the Titans realize no team is going to overpay to move up and draft Winston, Winston falls to the team that everyone thinks is the prime candidate to move up and select him.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars - Randy Gregory - DE - Nebraska

The one player most identified with the Jags falls right in their laps.

----

So how does you top six picks stack up to this projection?

I don't think we beat the Texans sadly, but still think we are in with a good shot of grabbing either Gregory or Williams. Both the Bucs and the Jets would be mad to pass up on a quarterback, so it's only the Raiders (and possibly) the Redskins we have to worry about. It only gets complicated for us if both Williams and Gregory are taken. So yes, your scenario is very possible.

In think there is little chance of a trade now, unless someone falls in love with Amari Cooper (who isn't the same prospect Watkins was last year unfortunately)

Does feel strange though, to have had such a poor season results-wise and find there could be five teams drafting ahead of us.

I think the Tennessee pick depends on what they do this offseason with their GM and coaching staff.

A new GM/coach would have no allegiance to Mettenberger and could grab Mariota or Winston if either is available.

The Titans right now are about as listless as the 2012 Jaguars so it would not surprise me if they blow it all up.

I feel like you projected the Jaguars to select the player you want them to select.

I think Williams to Tennessee makes sense.  They need defensive playmakers.

I don't see Gregory falling there though.

Actually, I am a big fan of Shane Ray because he actually produced this past season as opposed to Randy Gregory who is all potential and did not produce near to his current draft status.

So far it appears that the Jags will either draft in the 5th or 6th position based solely on whether they beat the Texans next week. The Jets will select 5th if the Jags win and 6th if the Jags lose to the Texans.

There certainly a chance that the Titans take Gregory or Ray in lieu of Williams with the 2nd pick. The wildcard in all of this is what the Redskins do with their pick.

It is not out of the question that Amari Cooper is the player remaining of the top 6 players noted above.

If I am the Jags I would attempt to trade down with the Browns for one of their two Rd 1 picks, preferably Pick 14 and a Rd 3 pick.

Then I would target T.J. Clemmings - OT - Pittsburgh with Pick 14.

That would be an awesome scenario.  Get an extra pick and then get a potential stud tackle.

I think the lynchpin in any trade deal involving an extra Rd 3 pick is to gain the ability to trade back in the later part of Rd 2. I think it will be in Rd 2 where there will be a run on RBs and FS.

I believe Free Agency will reveal a little bit of the Jags' hand when it comes to selecting a DE in Rd 1. If the Jags decide to go after JPP of the Giants then I think they may be opting for a trade down partner to secure an extra Rd 3 selection.

Clearly a Franchise RB would be Blake Bortles best friend going into the 2015 NFL season.

Yea Ray is the guy I want, he got sacks in about every game has like 15 on the year, he had 4.5 sacks last year when he was behind Sam and the other DE that went high last year.

My list is Ray, Williams, Fowler and then Gregory

I feel the need to trade down, we dont need to load up on more young players, we need to pick the best player at our pick, only if we were at 1 or 2 and somebody was willing to give us a kings ransom for a QB yea trade back.

This year Gus will get his defensive player, we went offense in the 1st round the last 2 years

even with the 6th pick I would some how love it if we could trade down, like someone had said the browns might be willing to trade and Id more than likely take that.

That would help but not as much as an offensive lineman. A horrible offensive line is why Blake Bortles gets sacked more than anyone else.

What we did in the past has no effect on whether we go offense or defense in the first round. If no safety is good enough to be a top five pick. I want an offensive player in Round 1.

Trade down, trade down, trade down. All everyone wants to do on here and the team never gets close to doing it.

If all people want to do is trade down, they must think Caldwell has no good options at the top.
