Of course, he's a rookie, but he finished with a rating of 69.5, last in the NFL.  He had only 11 TDs against 17 INTs, worst ratio in the NFL.  He took 55 sacks, most in the NFL.  Only Derek Carr's yards per attempt was worse. 

 

In Byron Leftwich's rookie year, he finished with rating of 73.0, good for 21st out of 32 qualifiers in the NFL.  He had 14 TDs against 16 INTs.  He took only 19 sacks, one of the fewest in the NFL.  His yards per attempt was18th in the NFL.

 

By nearly every comparative measure, Byron Leftwich's rookie season was far better than Blake Bortles'.

 

In Blaine Gabbert's rookie year, he finished with a rating of 77.4, 25th out of 32 qualifiers.  He had 9 TDs against 6 INTs,  He did take 22 sacks in limited snaps, one of the worst percentages in the NFL.  His yards per attempt were worst in the NFL.  Of course, the last two statistics were the best measure of his deficiencies.

 

But ask yourself, look at their stats, and is Bortles more like Gabbert or Leftwich, and how did Leftwich turn out for you?

 

I still think Bortles can develop into a very good QB.

Bortles was surrounded by rookies and mediocre veterans. I don't know why anybody would be surprised by how terrible the offense was this year. And unless the team actually goes out in free agency and adds some competent veteran talent, next year won't be much better.

 

Often overlooked...  How can you build any kind of momentum when passes are dropped?  The offense was a picture of inexperience + incompetency + rookie QB = awful.

 

That said I'm still not convinced a defensive minded coach with a bad offense is going to improve in year three.

I think you're making a good argument here, but like any statistical argument it can't truly stand on its own. This is especially true when you are comparing groups with different variables. For example the difference in talent around Blake and Byron.


One thing I take out of it is that Blake is a tough player. He took an incredible amount of sacks without sustaining an injury or ever appearing scared.


Your stats also show some of the issues he's had in the red zone considering the relatively high yardage with low TD numbers, and of course the issues with interceptions.


One thing the stats don't show is his fantastic ability to escape pressure and extend plays (not always a good thing). Or the added rushing ability he brings to the table.

The 4th down pass is inexcusable!!!!!!! That shows how smart BB is. Can he be coached??? I doubt it. Stupid is... well you know the rest. For those that do not know what I am talking about.

As a QB you HAVE to know you HAVE to keep the ball in play!!!! What is the worst that can happen on 4th down if you get it intercepted??? You will lose the game either way. At least give your WR a chance.

 

Why didn't Shorts catch the 1st down ball?  

 

If you had JJ Watt breathing down your neck the whole game because you're offensive line can't give you two seconds, what are you supposed to actually do?

Numbers don't tell the whole story here.  Shorts was drop prone and the next 3 receivers were rookies.  There was a nearly non existent running game, and his offensive line gave him no time.  His receivers in many cases had very little separation.

 

The list goes on and on why this offense was bad.  Bortles was a rookie qb and everyone wants to move on right away.  Makes no sense.  You don't waste your first round pick on a qb every year.  If you do, you will continue to be deficient in other areas.

Blaming Bortles is a mistake. Do not forget that Blake Borles was not meant to start this season. Blame Chad Henne. The offense is very young. These guys were, walking into defeat each game they played. Bortles made mistakes, but had some bright spots aswell. Look at how he finished this last game. He nearly pulled off the win.

 

Lets see how Bortles does with a little more experiance and time to practice, during the off season. He's going to be a great player soon enough.

Honestly I don't think there is any suitable comparison for the rookie play between Leftwich, Gabbert and Bortles.  I think Bortles is better but when you grade it I would go with incomplete.  All of this points to average coaching since Coughlin left.  I was totally onboard with Coughlin departing but yikes we have really spun our wheels and had seasons of madness.

Im tired of this crap. Everyone said how much trash Blaine was his first year then this guy gets a free pass? We will be 4-12 next year book it! For the love of God please draft Mariota.

 

A 69.5 QB Rating is really bad I agree with you on that.  You do have to keep in mind that he played behind the worst Offensive Line in the NFL if not the top 3 worst Olines this year.  He was under pressure almost every snap, LT Luke Joekel shouldve been benched the way he performed this season.  The running game was practially non-existent, and Fisch had some really bad play calling...

Just like Blaine they said he would sit all year...

 

excuses aside... Blake showed flashes of really great performance and some really bad choices and throws....


He's a rookie QB so you have to expect a learning year, and most would rate him at least the 3rd best rookie QB this season.

 

I do not think he's garbage that's too harsh and way to early to tell.

 

He is ranked 24th (yards) 58.9% *Not bad for all injured rookie WRs, 2,908 yards, 11Tds, 17ints (yikes), 69.5 qb rating ( sigh)

 

Hopefully during the offseason a couple pickups in Oline, maybe WR or RB, and he should be twice improved.. if not bigger concerns to the Jaguars success...

The other thing Leftwich had going against him was he was replacing Mark Brunell who was a fan favorite.  And when he wasnt instantly better than Mark, fans were upset.  Bortles has the luxury of coming in following Gabbert who set the bar so low.

 

And as someone else mentioned Leftwich had Fred Taylor and Jimmy Smith while Bortles has Toby Gerhart and uh... is Shorts our best WR? Hurns? Robinson?  who knows...

I agree with this overall.

 

People maintained that Leftwich's lack of mobility made him prone to hits and sacks.

 

Bortles has the mobility that Leftwich only dreamed of having, yet he took way more sacks in one season than BL ever did.

 

QB mobility is not a substitute for a good OL.

 

Bortles needs help.

 

Get him an every down RB and a couple of good tackles and Bortles will be okay.
