Quote:My brother-in-law who works marketing with the Titans says they are really high on Mettenberg and he doesn't think they will draft QB. Obviously that means nothing other than speculation of what might be our options if Winston is on the board when we draft and the possibility of us trading with someone who covets a QB in this draft.

Regards......................the Chiefjag
Though some may find the thought repugnant due to college loyalty, we gotta root for Winston to have a strong post season.  If there is any chance Winston falls to us at three, we need him to be viable enough of a commodity to draw trade interest to give us options.

The best thing that could happen to the Titans is to get some team to give them 3 Rd 1 selections for the 2nd QB in this draft class.

Cleveland might be willing to do just that given all the DRAMA around Johnny Football.

I personally believe that Tampa will take Winston with Rd 1 and Mariota of Oregon will fall to the Ttians. The Titans are not so stupid to think that Franchise QBs grow on trees. The Owner will step in an force the Front Office to draft the Face of the Franchise, because in the NFL, they still want to sell tickets and fill stadiums.

BTW, Scherff is a clone of Bulaga and Buluga could not even hold down the OLT spot for the Packers. Scherff would make a wonderful ORT, but he could end up being an All-Pro OG. Do the Jags really need to draft an OG in Rd 1? I don't think so!

Quote:Iowa has produced great OL over the years.

Robert Gallery notwithstanding, the Hawkeyes have produced quality starters at T Riley Reiff and Bryan Bulaga, G Marshall Yanda for the Ravens, G Eric Steinbach, Mike Devlin in Buffalo, Bob Kratch, and John Alt and Joel Hilgenberg.

How many of those players would you want with the 3rd overall pick in the draft?  I'd be more than happy to take Scherff at the top of the 2nd round were he to fall but thats obviously unlikely.  I dont have anything against Iowa lineman as in I wouldnt draft them.  But again, it was more a compliment to Ferentz, I think he maximizes his players talent and there is little room to get better.  If we take an olineman at 3, I want them to be a cornerstone left tackle.  Is Scherff going to be that?  Unlikely with Iowa's track record.  He may end up a really good/great RT or guard.  But we dont need to use the 3rd pick on that.

I will admit I haven't seen a lot of Scherff (I recorded a game earlier that I have not watched, and I will watch the game v. Tennessee).  What I have seen of him, he shows pretty decent feet, ability to hit a guy in space, good drive blocking/run blocking, and nastiness.  I want to see him in pass protection though.

Would I take him 3rd overall?

At this point-unknown until I am convinced he can be a quality pass protector.

It's funny how things workout in the draft. People would have bet their house thar there was no way Bridgewater would fall to #32 at this time last year.

The most interesting mock trade that I saw involved the Titans taking Leonard Williams at Pick 2.

In this mock scenario Da Bears offered Picks 7 and 39 for Pick 3 and the chance to take the 2nd QB.

I'm all for taking Scherff let him and Joeckel battle it out for LT and slide the loser inside or out to RT. I've said in other threads I'm all for drafting 2-3 linemen early in the draft if necessary. Just fix the oline it has to be the priority this offseason.

I'm not sure id take that trade tbh. I would consider this years first and next years first with us giving them next years third.

What if Cleveland offered up numbers 12 and 19?

I would prefer an extra 1st next year, but you would almost have to take the trade.

Scherff isn't a LT, IMO. Which is the problem taking him at #3. I love his attitude, which IMO is something this OL can certainly use. But at #3? I don't think so. Still going through the other possible options though, and so far, I'm having a difficult time deciding who I'd want other than Williams. The others all have glaring weaknesses that makes them risky at #3 or play a non-premium position.

Unless we decide to dip in the LT pool again...

The only way I would draft Scherff is if we were able to trade down for more picks.  It would probably still have to be in the top 10 picks though.
