Does anyone else find it surprising that they decided to go with Koetter instead of Trestman since they are undoubtedly going with either Mariota or Winston at QB?

I think there will be a quarterback competition in training camp.

Most likely Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

The main points on this end are:

1.   The Bucs have pick # 1 in the 2015 NFL Draft.   Lovie Smith likely hired Dirk Koetter with the thought process that he has a good idea who the Bucs will draft if the team keeps pick # 1.    Or at the very least,  it's narrowed down to two QB's,  with Koetter being looked at as a major asset for either QB.

2.   Regardless of who wins the opening day regular season QB job,   the big picture is what Lovie Smith is looking at.  The Bucs might have a bridge to their QB of the future.   But the decision to hire Koetter has little to do with the bridge,  compared to the long term.

I did not have any expectations. All I can think about this is good for the Jaguars because Marc Trestman was on their interview list.

Jags/Bucs does that make us masochist?

There is a very good chance of that. Of the two QBs i think Winston fits kotters type offense better then Mariota. Its possible kotter could change his offensive scheme but i think that just tipped thier hand or they dont believe either will be good and will trade out.

I hope the Bucs do draft crablegs. This puts immense pressure on the tacks at this point. Do they draft their 2nd potential Heisman bust, or more likely a sure thing in Williams?

The only bad thing about not having Winston in our division would be not getting to wear crab leg arms to the game once a year.

Interesting blurb about Koetter:

Quote:Koetter runs a pro-style offense that is heavy on the passing side, which could be a fit for Winston. But he also has a strong connection on the Mariota side -- current Oregon coach Mark Helfrich was Koetter's quarterbacks coach for eight years, starting at Boise State (1998-2000) and later at Arizona State (2001-05). Helfrich's first coaching job was as a graduate assistant at Oregon in 1997 when Koetter was the offensive coordinator for the Ducks.

They're about the same in my book now, even when they play each other I hope one doesn't embarrass the other.

They could stay put and draft neither of them. That is more likely than trading down.
