Ode to "Let's talk about"

Nope. Not a married, never have been.

But last night wasn't like that. She was just very heavy handed with the pour, and decided to share some of her shift drinks with me.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

I didn't mean to insinuate (well maybe slightly)... but you had to attract her on some level you sly devil. That's always a good feeling.

Ha! A lot of jealous eyes were on you I'm sure. Hell, I'm getting jealous just thinking about it - I just realized I don't drink at a single bar with a cute (straight) bartender stationed at it.

What? You hang out at GBLT bars? Or are all the girls in your area falling under the "L" designation?

The particular bar is not designated as anything, but the 4-5 bartenders that work there are all lesbians. It's a sports bar actually.

How does that work do you guys harvest and weigh it yourselves or the purchaser weigh the crop?

Company event. Sitting at the hotel bar. No commute. Haven't been this loaded in a while. Was that cryptic enough?

Ha, it actually gets weighed and measured by the USDA before reaching the purchaser, all though it is trucked there by the purchaser.

But I count the bins and I can eyeball them and get their weight within 100lbs or so. So if you have 20 bins filled to the top you know that's about 1100lbs per bin for a total around 22,000lbs. That's a truckload for me, and my loads came in from a low of 23,200lbs to a high of 24,000lbs so it all looked pretty good.

If you're really paranoid you can watch them unload and weigh them at the station but I don't worry about it that much.

On the harvesting there are a few ways to do it.

You can have guys come in and they clip the bunches off at the stem and lay them on 24x36in trays in the row middles to dry for about 17 days. Then you take each tray and wrap it up either like a burrito or like a cigar for another 3-5 days for finish drying. Then you just pick them up and throw them in bins. This is the most traditional and expensive method of making raisins, and also the most dangerous because the fruit is on the ground for 21 days total.

I do a few parts of my field like this and I think I might have posted a picture of my son rolling trays for me last harvest.

Most of my field I have done in a combination machine/hand harvest. A crew will come in and clip the fruiting canes so the vine cannot transfer water to the bunches any longer. The bunches stay on the vine like this for 14 days and dry about 1/2 of the way there. Then a machine comes through and lays them on a continuous 48in tray which they stay on for 7 days or so. You can't roll a continuous tray like a traditional one so instead I have the crew cut the trays into 10 foot lengths and make about a 50lbs raisin bundle which then gets picked up by hand 1-2 days later. This method is a little cheaper and offers the advantage of the fruit being on the ground only 8-9 days.

You can get cheaper and shorter time on the ground (7days) by the same method as above but picking up with a machine (no bundling).

The last option is completely drying on the vine which is the safest of all but my field isn't trellissed to do that.
