Is It Time to Move On From Marcedes Lewis?
|
Lewis' production doesn't warrant the salary he's being paid. He either needs to restructure, or he needs to go.

Funny in 2011 - http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81...ks-proceed
The Jaguars placed the franchise tag on ProBowl tight end Marcedes Lewis on Wednesday, worth $7.3 million for the 2011 season. The end of this season, Rotoworld http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nfl/3615/marcedes-lewis "He’s no longer a threat as a receiver and battled drops all season" _________________________________________ I was always confused by Lewis whom dropped so many passes over the years, and wasnt a great blocker not like Kyle Brady was for example yet paid so much... why didnt they cut / trade him years ago? Its not like he is loved so much by the fan base.... I really dont understand why he's so confident in dealing with the press, saying things like he feels no one can cover him...... I really dont think losing Lewis would effect this team at all either way.
Quote:Marcedes Lewis' contract is right up there with Garrard's in the category of terrible contracts. Game was becoming pass heavy, yet we insisted on signing a TE who had only 1 decent year receiving-wise, and a quarterback whose best asset was his legs. I know this might come as a surprise to some people in here, but the Jags have been known to make some head-scratching moves when it comes to signing players to big contracts, especially in the past. Hopefully that is all behind them now and they will make better decisions on those big contracts going forward.
I survived the Gus Bradley Error.
Quote:Lewis' production doesn't warrant the salary he's being paid. He either needs to restructure, or he needs to go.Why does he need to restructure? Because you think they're paying him too much? He's already on the books for 2014. They have zero need to restructure his deal as it makes that pool of money they have to spend even larger, which I think they're already going to struggle to hit the floor for what they have to spend. Adding to that doesn't seem likely. If Lewis is still here when the dust settles, he'll play under the contract he's got. If he's gone, it's because they've found a way to upgrade that position either through free agency or the draft. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Not a fan of Lewis anymore, but he'll be a decent player to have if they bring in Juluis Thomas. Lewis can block and has made a few decent catches still today. I would not care if he gets dropped or not.

Call me crazy, but I like Lewis as a player.
Hopefully he can stay healthy for the majority of next year because I really DO think he's a very good player. A veteran gets off the bus first so to speak, a tough-looking huge body. I would only advocate getting rid of him if we sign an upgrade.

It's obvious to anyone with a functioning brain Lewis won't be on the roster next year at his current salary, I don't care how much cap space the Jaguars have, his play doesn't warrant the contract. If Marcedes was a FA of another team would you be ok with the Jaguars paying him $8M/year? I didn't think so, there's no reason to pay $8M to an ineffective TE, with your logic we might as well bring back MJD at a base of $6M/year, after all the Jaguars can afford it. This is probably more confirmation that either Thomas, Clay, or Cameron will be a Jag in two weeks:

Quote:If we get Julius/Clay/Niles Paul, you can be sure Lewis is out the door. Even if we don't get any of those guys I doubt Marcedes will be on the roster, we can easily draft his replacement in the 2nd round, if you can't tell I'm extremely low on Marcedes. I think he's one of the worst starting TE's in football, he offers nothing as a pass catcher and has blocking has taken a drastic step back over the last 2 seasons, he's awful. Yet, some people still think he has a chance of being on the roster with a $8M cap hit, there's no way that will happen. He's as good as gone, and it's about dang time.
I don't know if anyone will agree with this, but we are considering a predominantly pass-catching TE such as Thomas to upgrade the passing game. That much is obvious. However, here is where some roads diverge. Some say we still need to consider drafting a tight end or even signing another cheap option. Some say resign Lewis to a much cheaper contract and utilize as a blocker and occasional receiver. And more and more ideas.
I would like to throw out another idea. Why not give Harbor a chance as a 2nd option, or even Marcel Jensen? Harbor did ok, while Lewis was out and as a #2 TE receiving option isn't terrible. On the other hand, Jensen has been used as a blocker at times and to refresh some minds, most were happy when we picked him up after the draft. As NFL.com says, "He should only get better and has potential to become an asset in the running game and a mismatch in the passing game." I mean some scouts think that Jensen has the chance to be a good blocking and receiving TE, so instead of spending on 2 TEs or signing one and spending a draft pick on another, why not give Jensen more of a chance? Just some thoughts. Quote:I don't know if anyone will agree with this, but we are considering a predominantly pass-catching TE such as Thomas to upgrade the passing game. That much is obvious. As you stated Harbor, Jensen, and Jacobs will all be given an opportunity to battle for the 3rd (and potentially 2nd) spot.

If Lewis walks, and they sign a free agent like Thomas this year, Jensen would probably wind up being your blocking TE. He and Harbor will definitely get an opportunity to compete this off season. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

It's pointless playing the "if this then what?" game. He's on the roster. He's already accounted for under the salary cap. If the front office feels his contract is too much to absorb for what they were getting in return, they'll cut him. There's been some commentary coming from the front office that they actually like what they're seeing from Marcedes. Caldwell has been directly quoted saying his veteran leadership has value to the team. Doesn't sound like they're terribly concerned like you are about how much THEY are paying him. Like I've said all along. If they find a viable replacement and feel comfortable moving on, they will. They won't restructure his deal. They will simply part ways. Now, do I agree with keeping him around? No. I don't think his blocking has been up to snuff with what should be expected, and there have been far too many drops for a guy who came into the league as a pass catching TE. But, I'm not the one making the roster decisions, and I'm not the one paying his salary. Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Overdue to be quite honest. He's been a major dissapointment in the passing game since his most productive season. I can't say it's all on him. Pass protection has been an issue over the past few years. He's developed into a better blocker if anything. But he's not nearly as dynamic as we had hoped for when we took him out of the UCLA. He's made a good living here. I think his time is up. I could see him getting released and picked-up in no time by a team like New England, Seattle, or San Francisco who have tendencies to keep decent players around at that position.
As far as an upgrade? Depends on what you're looking for in your offense and at that position. Does Olson want a receiving threat or blocker? Or does he want a happy-medium? I don't see any Graham's or Gronkowski's in this year's draft but I do see some Heath Miller's and Dwayne Allens' though. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? If we cut bait with Lewis, wouldn't his entire salary be added to that "pool of money"? And if so, wouldn't a cut in pay be the better option? ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. I have not been impressed by Lewis at all.
He isn't worth the money he's being paid. Unless he takes a pay cut I would hope he is cut Quote:We should cut him then try to resign him for TE3 money. somebody else would sign him. he isn't as useless as fans here think
Quote:somebody else would sign him. he isn't as useless as fans here thinkYeah, but they would only be paying him 3 million per year, as opposed to the 8 million we would be paying him. |
