He was on the staff in Seattle from 2007 to 2012 so probably knows Gus.

The guy is good when dealing with the cap, which is his background. But he's not a scout/talent expert by any means.

Consulting in what?

Percy Harvin signing at a reduced rate after the Jets cut him?

He'll offer the team his advice on free agency and the draft, and they'll do exactly the opposite. Winning formula.

Why not? You can never have enough intellects in the building, he's a cap specialist, I like the hire.

hopefully he just sticks to the cap then

My guess is we are bringing him in to assist with FA acquisitions and contracts.

Idzik apparently is a cap guy and we're about to spend a lot in free agency, so the move makes sense.

Looks like that's exactly what he'll be doing here.

I think it would be a good hire. Mainly because Dave is still a young GM and we don't want him to just dish out contracts or dish out the wrong contracts. Maybe with Idzik he can help with structuring the contracts while Dave Caldwell and Gus Bradley try to reel them in with sweet talk. It sounds like DC is willing to seek help and just shows how much he cares about the overall franchise. Honestly there are some really dumb GM's/Owners in this league but Caldwell is a smart one.

Good thing the "Glacier" is not good for the talent side of things.  For cap management this should be a win.

Where your post really hits home for me is that this hiring could foreshadow us being major players in FA.

I know we have the space and we have to spend most of it in the next couple years, but being a Jags fan for as long as I have, I guess I just have a hard time believing it.

All of the sudden I feel pretty certain that we will be in play for a couple big-time FAs.

Cap management isn't rocket science, but enough teams get into trouble by mismanaging it. Bringing in someone who is well renowned as a cap guru and structuring deals that are smart could really help us down the road when our young guys are coming up for extensions. Smart management could allow for us to go after high priced free agents now and not sacrifice the future in terms of cap space and dead money.

We saw the Jets hired Gene Smith, and got an idea -- maybe we can also use the George Costanza Strategy.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Interesting move by the Jaguars...

These staff hires just keep getting better and better  :teehee:
