Well if we wanted a Seattle-style LEO...

#21

There is no such thing as a LEO, it is an ambiguous term and frankly I dont care if we get a LEO, ZEO, NINJA, MEGA, ULTRA, TURBO, etc just get a guy who can bend, shed blockers, secure the edge, and most importantly rush the passer.

Quote:So you admit you don't know anything about Bruce Irvin. He's a linebacker on first and second downs and rushes the passer on third down. Considering he posted those numbers as a part time rusher that's pretty impressive.

Ryan Davis was an UDFA and put up the same numbers last year as a part time pass rusher.

Ryan Davis WAS impressive as a situational pass-rusher... but that's all he is.  Irvin can do a lot more.

More tackles, 2 Interceptions, 3 PDs, and 2 defensive touchdowns.

"Same numbers" lol

Irvin was drafted 15th overall.

Still not what I would want if the Jaguars took a guy like Vic Beasley in the first round. I would hope for what the Niners have gotten (on the field) from Aldon Smith.

What the niners got is not the norm.  If Smith kept playing like he had been, he was on track for a HOF career.

Ray is still going to be a great Leo type player, in my opinion. Better than Gregory. If him not running these drills drops him late in rd 1, it wouldn't be crazy to come up and get him.

yeah but I really doubt he drops that far.

I'm sure he will run at his pro-day and post a good time.

The LEO position in Gus' system was created because of Chris Clemons.

Here's Clemons combine numbers:

6'3 236 (he's bulked up since)

4.68 in the 40 dash

1.72 in 10 yard

Broad jump: 9'08"

Dante Fowler:

6'2 261

4.60 in the 40

1.56, 1.62 in the 10 yard

Broad jump: 9'4"

Gregory:

6'5 235

4.64

1.60

10.5"

Gregory also posted 23 reps on the bench.

From a physical standpoint, both appear to have the traits that they are looking for in a LEO. IMO, Fowler is a bit "safer" than Gregory, which is why I like him. Gregory has some "wow" athleticism though, he just doesn't show up much other than occasional flashes. Comparatively speaking, Gregory is similar physically to Dion Jordan.

I still have a tough time thinking of either as a #3 pick.  If it works, great!  I just see a lot of risk drafting tweeners that high.

Also, I don't understand what's "dropped" Gregory/"raised" Fowler.  There's nothing that's changed since before the combine.  Both had strong workouts, and the tape hasn't changed on either.

I don't particularly think this is a strong draft at the top.  So, maybe this is just one of those years we'll have to make a pick at #3 that may not crack the top 10 had it been a more competitive/talented draft class.  That being said, that means there's probably better value later if we can trade out.

The thing about Jordan was that the dolphins didn't have a plan with him. They had him add weight.....believe he's about 270 now and he played as a base end. With what I've seen from Walsh etc with the d-line and lbs, any prospect they pick I'll be good with because I've seen them teach with success

Thought...Are Gregory and Fowler the Bridgewater and Bortles respectively of this draft? Both Bridgewater and Gregory were seen as the best at their position to begin with then an unknown to an extent with Bortles being from UCF and Fowler underperforming or not really focused on early took over because of a good combine and their size. Looks so to me at least

Ideal situation IMO is we get Leonard at 3 or he goes 2 and someone trades up for MM at 3.

The #3 spot is just not an ideal spot for us given our needs.

No people are dropping Gregory because he's pidgeonholed himself as a 3-4 OLB with his size. He's explosive at the spot, but Beasley and Fowler (and Dupree) out combined him all at much heavier weights.

If anyone is getting the Bridgewater treatment, its Amari Cooper.

gregory is quick and fast but lacks the strength he would need to really excel at rushing the passer in the NFL.

its not like hes an 18 year old kid who could still get a lot stronger. i dont think he really has it in him.

Gregory to me is purely a developmental pick.  I would not draft him in the top 5.

He's 235 lbs.  He will need to add at least 20-25 lbs to play DE, which he hasn't shown he can do.  He's also not a freak athletically, and I worry if he would lose a step if he bulked up to 260.

I would prefer Beasley over him at this point.
