First, they brought in former head coach Doug Marrone to be "Assistant Head Coach". Next, they bring in former GM John Idzik to be front office "Consultant".

 

You couldn't be set up any better if you decided to "clean house".

Idzik is a cap specialist. He's not a GM and clearly showed that in NY.

 

We're going to be big spenders in F/A, and it doesn't hurt to have more experience, (someone who was a GM nonetheless, there is only 32 positions like that in the world, mind you). He did great in Seattle managing the cap which led him to a GM gig.

This dude went to school at Dartmouth (undergrad) and Duke as a grad student.

 

It's obvious this guy is intelligent.  That said, if this hire is specific to managing the cap, I can see how that will benefit the Jags.  We can only hope that our young players and free agent acquisitions do so well that we're one day talking about the difficult decisions on which of our pro bowlers we need to keep and which of our pro bowlers we need to let go. :thumbsup:

I'm fine with the hire. People have to realize he did something right to get a GM job. He may have failed in that role with that much responsibility but it does not mean in a reduced role he will fail. This may be his niche in the league. He can also learn and enhance his weaknesses.


To me it makes sense to load up on all this previous coaches and executives. The connections and experienced gained for the future is priceless.

The Glacier comes from the Around the NFL podcast. They had a Jets fan on the team and that was his nickname for Mr Idzik. It was based on how slowly he performed his duties on the talent side of the GM Responsibilities. The Jets fans were happy when they let him go but did acknowledge the rock solid job he did in cap management.


Basically, great cap management does not a talent evaluator make.

It's Khan's money.  If he wants to spend it on a cap consultant/guy to help work out contract structures  - what's the big deal?
