What is happening with the 49ers?

I thought you were supposed to be an OSU fan and you don't know that answer?

The meltdown threads are readily identifiable.

No doubt it can't be viewed as a very positive off season for the 49ers that's for sure.

Read some tweets from the Niner media. The whole organization (owners, GM) is alienating everyone.

First Harbaugh, other coaches, players, fans. A freefall.

It's all Kaepernick's fault

Its niners' brass fault. They shouldnt have gave him that huge contract. He was a fad. He is not a real QB. His QB IQ is like a 1.

Should they have kept Alex Smith?

There's no way he would have gotten that big of a contract, even if it is as they say "team friendly".

There's no doubt DCs have adjusted to Kaeps style of play and are making him throw the ball now.

Can anyone recall a more spectacular and thorough meltdown over the course of one offseason than what we are witnessing with the 49ers this year?

I can't.

We have seen teams strapped by the salary cap get their talent siphoned off gradually over a few seasons (Dallas of the 1990s, Buffalo of the 1990s).

We have seen teams let free agents go every year (Pittsburgh).

We have seen teams get old in a hurry (Oakland).

But I can't recall a team that within a 2-3 month span:

Lost a Super Bowl head coach-Harbaugh is in Michigan

Lost the defensive coordinator-Fangio is in Chicago

Lost the offensive coordinator-Roman is in Buffalo

Lost the best player on the team in his prime-Willis is retiring

Lost the best offensive lineman in his prime-Iupati is going to sign with Arizona

Lost the starting RB-Gore might be a Colt

Lost the best DL-Justin Smith is retiring

Lost a starting WR-Crabtree is also leaving

Lost a good rotational guy on defense in Skuta

All of this happened and we are still more than a month and a half away from the draft.

Keep in mind at this point:

Their best pass rusher (Aldon Smith) is possibly one off field transgression from being cut

Their best LB remaining didn't play last year due to a knee injury (Navarro Bowman), and there is no telling if he will be back to where he was pre injury.

Finally, as other posters have astutely observed, their recent draft classes have been abysmal.

It was as if 49ers ownership said "Welp...we got our new stadium...made a decent run at a championship.  Our job is done."

Bullseye,   one thing that jumps out after reading your excellent most recent post in this thread is I'm sure the 49ers fan base collectively wishes that Eddie DeBartolo Jr. was still at the top of the organization.

While I like the addition of WR Torrey Smith,  the overall early part of the off-season has indeed been a disaster for a team that had a very good 3 year recent run.   This doesn't bode well in a strong overall division with arguably the best roster in the NFL in the Seahawks and the best HC in the NFC in Bruce Arians.   Not to mention the St. Louis Rams fearsome Front Four on Defense.

Exactly.

As I wrote the above, in my mind I compared what the 49ers ownership is doing now to Jerry Jones firing Jimmy Johnson, and I am contrasting the current 49ers ownership to the Eddie Debartolo era.

As much as I despised the 49ers then, Debartolo did whatever it took to win, and by all accounts did everything first class and top notch.

To put this in additional perspective...

The departures are not only a talent exodus: A combined 20 Pro Bowl appearances and three Hall of Fame-caliber players are potentially leaving. More important, Gore, Smith and Willis represent a huge part of the 49ers’ locker room leadership — and much of the roster’s toughness — walking out the door.

With an inexperienced head coach on top of that.

He has one (1) year as a head coach (2006 Rein Fire).  and 2 years as a defensive coordinator (Berlin Thunder).

Yes. Gabbert is better than fans give him. Ive been saying this for a while. He just needed time and a coach to mold him. Remember, he wasnt supposed to play until his sophmore season (like Bortles).

The team got old, and the coach left.  The window was shutting before he left.

Time to rebuild, and quickly.

I think we all know that's nowhere near as easy as it sounds, or the way the team makes it sound, don't we?
