How Do We Improve As A Team?

#21

Quote:Step one would be retain talent at a position until you find an upgrade for that position.

That is one of the things that has bothered me in this never ending rebuilding process excuse for the last decade.  The problem I have with the Jaguars is in an effort to be better on Offense they let the defense fall apart & now we stink at both sides of the ball.  Figure out what we are the best at, and improve on that.  If for example we have the best running back / running game than improve that find stronger TEs that are basically OTs not receiving TEs like M. Lewis.  Improve the OLine not keep a center thats going to be 50 soon, or Uche at guard when he wouldnt start on any other team's Oline. Will Rackley got ow3d how long do they keep trying with this injury prone average guard?  On defense Paul is a beast, and Russell Allen is okay but the DLine is still bad.  Why not focuse on the Dline that needs the most help as it has stunk for over a few years in the worst pass rush in the NFL and at stopping the run?   Okay Gus says we are improving why then so many miss tackles?  That is the basic building block is it not?

Quote:1. Draft a QB. Pray he isnt another franchise "cant miss" like Jamarcus Russell. Or blows out his hip in the 2nd practice.

For everyone thinking all is sunny because some Hotshot college QB will be here next year, remember there are no guarantees.

2. Draft 2 guards and 2 centers. Must bench press 450 pounds, move his feet like Boselli, and have some serious attitude problems. No nice guys need apply for the interior of the line. The refs cant see guards anyway in all the action, so we need someone fairly despictable. In fact, open try outs should be held  immediately at prisons around the country for men expecting a release in the next 8 months.

Mr.Khan can play this up to the newspapers as his attempt to "Give men a second chance at life".  Everyone needs love and a second chance, right?

3. Draft a tight end that won the Mackey award, runs like Bo Jackson,  avoids tackles like Aaron Hernandez, but with a little more brains,

If no suitable football players are available, Remember the NBA only has so many slots, so there are a ton of power forwards on the street that may work great. Lets get creative.

4 Very important- The Next Free agency, BUY the most expensive Corner and Safety available. If a guy is under 30 years of age and has more than 1 pro bowl on their resume, bid, bid, then bid some more. Bid until it hurts Mr.Khan. That cap space thing, it means you can spend up to that amount. Cap Space is not the distance between a bumper and a car frame. You have money, spend it on some established young pro bowlers.

That's it, a one year turnaround to respectability, and a championship in 3 years.

(Mr.Khan, send my interim GM check  ASAP please. I have car repairs to make! )

This looks great!!!

I cannot disagree here, I do agree with you in FA, Find a DB captain that is a stud and pay for him. I would also like to find a Guard or a Center in FA as well.(or both)

(I watched the bears last night with a rookie guard and rookie tackle on the right side of the line and they were awesome. Here's to our scouting team getting it right!!!!)

LOVE THEM JAGUARS!

Our offense has to build upon the mission of a pass first team. Gone are the days of Taylor and Mojo has lost a step.

so has to get guards and a center great at blocking for the pass. The tackles need to learn how to pass block or be traded for those who do. Need receiving Te to create mis matches. And most importantly a QB that can either scramble or be elusive enough to move and then throw. And be able to trust the receivers to get open and not just throw it when they are open.

I keep battling in my head about a franchise QB or an elite pass rusher. And can't honestly say one is needed more then the other. With Clowney out there. Wilson be running for his life as well as Pryor or smith.

However we could score more with an elusive QB. So come to conclusion if pick first or second either is fine as long as cream of crop.

So they replaced most of the Dline and we had 3 rookies in the secondary yesterday but defense wasn't a focus?

Get good players the first time and stop blowing it all up every few years.

My 5 to improve....

1. Get a QB ....teams don't let good young QBs go in free agency, draft him next year.

2. Resign the Youth ....Monroe should be put under contract now, so another hole does not exist.

3. Fix the interior OL ....whether through draft or FA, no pass or run game will be good without this.

4. Find a Rush DE (Leo) ...Branch is not the answer, and Babin's not the future.

5. Spend Wisely, But Spend ....being about $20m under the cap hurts the roster today, FA upgrades will exist this offseason.

#3 should be somewhat fixed by going back to man blocking and ditching the zone blocking until they replace them with players that can do it

Quote:I'm not sold on Bridgewater. Other than the FL game last year what has he done against ranked schools?

Louisville plays high school teams week after week.

I think Brett Hundley would be a better choice, at least he plays against better competition.

Agreed on bridgewater. Like any other QB we draft he would be a project and not likely to produce as quickly as last years three QBs. Maybe at best like Manuel or Geno this year.

Basically Caldwell screwed up. They felt that with a tweaked blocking scheme they could make do with this offensive line as long as we had more speed at position players. However, that only works well if everyone on the team can do their job and your QB can quickly and accurately judge the defense presnap. Neither gabbert or henne can and with so many young wr/rb etc they haven't clicked yet.

Plus the interior line has declined worse than last year quicker than we predicted. They should have used the draft to get a new center and guard instead of ace and Denard. Sure it would have been boring. But maybe this team would be not be this bad. But that is all hindsight.

Like they drafted all secondary last year, next year needs to be all linemen. Off and def. unless they have some gems on the practice squad or something that just need a more thorough look.

I respectfully disagree.  Meester is a great guy but father time caught up with him, Rackley just isn't good, and Nwaneri is inconsistent and seems often injured to me.  The possible change in scheme may help short term, but won't fix the issue in any lasting fashion.

no doubt they need to be replaced, but you aren't replacing them this year

I hope Gene has to work a minimum wage job for the rest of his life. He ruined this football team.
