I know why they released Red but I'm just curious if they did it with a certain player in mind.

They've got 3 years to worry about that.  I'm sure they'll hit their target knowing how they manage the cap.

 

I'm pretty sure the certain player they had in mind was Odrick.  They're not cutting a player to save money to sign someone else considering they're still a ton under the cap.

There really isn't even a big penalty for not meeting that cap minimum other than giving your current roster a bonus.  Not like the league takes away draft picks or fines etc...

Odds are if they didn't find a way to spend to the required limits, they'd issue not likely to be earned incentive bonuses to tie that money up in order to comply and to continue pushing that money forward.

I'll have to check, but I believe the limit applies to cash spending. So you can't use bonuses that are not actually earned to hit it.

Seriously.  The team upgraded the position.  Bryant was always figured to be a band aid until they could do exactly that.

People really don't understand this.  No they haven't, and no they don't need to.  There's no penalty from the league if they don't.  If they spend to say 75% over the average that extends to the next two years, then the percentage difference between 75 and 89 percent gets paid to the players on the roster as a bonus.  The league will not fine the team.  We will not lose draft picks.

That is wasted money that could have brought other players in.  Example.  We spend $4 million less than we have to according to that 89%.  We are forced to pay it to the players on the roster as a bonus.  We could have brought in a $4 million player and cut the 53rd man on the roster.....which is a more prudent way to spend the money?  That's why you MUST hit the 89%, otherwise you are using it incredibly unwisely.

Not if you don't think there's an upgrade.  I'm very happy with how they've spent money so far this offseason.  But one thing they haven't done is spend money for the sake of spending money.  Demarco would have been cool, but JT was the prize for us.  Everybody wanted a RT, done.  People were worried about Marks not being ready, done.  LB brought in when JT Thomas left, done.  TE finally addressed with the most dynamic TE of the last two years.  DB brought in to compete for a starting spot.  Safety brought in to compete for FS.  

 

RB is one of the positions where we aren't in a bind, and you are gushing about spending upwards of $8-9 million per year for a RB who finished the season with a cast on his hand and who played injured for the second half of the year.  Sorry, but I don't think the team wants to spend that kind of money on a guy who's position isn't a need, and what little need there is could be addressed in the draft.

There is always an upgrade out there.  We finished the last 3 years with 9 wins!  How could there not be an upgrade to Joe Blow 53rd roster spot?
